Announcing the Winning on Principle Newsletter

HeaderFull

Just as Jeff recently reprinted from the first edition of Young American Revolution, we recognize that political success is only honorable if we stand for principle, and that liberty will only prevail if we win politically.

To embody this axiom, the mission of Young Americans for Liberty is to train, educate, and mobilize youth activists committed to "winning on principle."

In order to advance our mission and Jeff's promise in that article, I'm proud to announce this exclusive bi-weekly email titled, "The Winning on Principle Newsletter" that you should have received in your inbox today.

Before you scroll down to read, please allow me to explain its purpose.

The Winning on Principle Newsletter is designed to clearly articulate effective strategies, tactics, and ideas that you can use on campus or on a campaign. Our goal is to equip YAL members with practical political knowledge, so you know how to win with our principled message.

Every other week, YAL's Executive Director, Jeff Frazee, and I will share with you a new lesson from campaign experts and lifelong activists who have dedicated their lives to the political process.

Nearly all of these lessons you will never hear in school. That is why we believe the Winning on Principle Newsletter is a valuable source of information. It's an investment in our movement.

If you truly believe in our cause, then you owe it to our philosophy to learn how to win. And with information like this, win we shall.

The Rand Paul primary campaign has been an exercise in message discipline, image control, and managerial competence that should be broadly admired and studied.

YAL Student on Radio Show Discussing Disturbing Confrontation with Congressional Candidate

I recently posted an article entitled "Local Congressional Candidate Can't Name Bill of Rights." This article discussed another article written by James Robertson, which described an encounter our YAL chapter had with a local congressional candidate, Angela McGlowan. We were asking people to name the first ten amendments to the U.S. Constitution outside of our student union and decided to give her have a shot at it. Her response was very unexpected and ended with her asking the police to remove the students from the Student Union entrance area. Go here to read the full story.

Well, this encounter snowballed into a relatively large media interest. The potential congresswoman was asked about the confrontation on the Paul Gallo show, a popular talk radio show on Super Talk Radio in Mississippi, where she defended herself by calling the YAL members "out of order." It ended with one of our members, James Robertson, getting asked onto the same radio show to give his version of the story. I thought you might like to listen to the two interviews. Unfortunately, the second interview is worse sound quality and therefore lower volume. But anyway, hope you enjoy!

CPAC 2010 Sumo Championship

Sixty-Four contestants 'Belly'd up to Big Government' and took part in YAL's CPAC Sumo YAL SumoWrestling Tournament on Friday, February 19th at the Marriott Wardman Hotel in Washington, D.C.   It was an incredibly fun and popular event and literally hundreds of people participated in open wrestling throughout the weekend against "Big Government", portrayed by 'Big Sis' Janet Napolitano.

The event was covered by many major media outlets, and even made it live on Fox News:

Here's footage of the Championship Match between Ralph (in Red) and our Tournament Champ Mitch (sporting Blue)!  Congratulations to all who participated!

Liberty Organizations Overtake CPAC 2010

I had intended on writing a recap of my experience at this years Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), however, I believe this video sums up my thoughts and emotions quite well.

Reflections on the Revolution at CPAC 2010

I have been to two CPACs, in 2008 and 2010.  In 2008, the Ron Paul supporters were a few isolated crazy people and Paul came in fourth in the presidential straw poll, with 12% of the vote. In 2010 -- well, you already know.

The shift in power toward Ron Paul and the Campaign for Liberty is so astounding that I probably would not fully believe it had I not been present at CPAC this year myself -- which is not to say that C4L is anywhere close to its goal of reclaiming the Republican Party. We should remember that 69% of straw poll voters voted for someone other than Ron Paul. Dick Cheney got a standing ovation, to chants of "Run, Dick, Run!" (meaning "run for president," not "you better run, you bastard" as per my chant.) And Marco Rubio got similar applause when he giggled over the thought of waterboarding terrorists.

Nevertheless, revolutions don't occur by sheer majority force alone. They occur when a determined minority is well organized enough to actually realize its ideals. It is often cited that before the American revolution, one third of people were patriots, one third were loyalists, and one third were indifferent. By this standard, the libertarians are well on their way to reclaiming the GOP. When I was passing out flyers for C4L, more than a few people responded, "I already have five of those! You people are everywhere!" This is true testament to C4L's excellent organizational capacity.

TV Spot for YAL Group During 1st Presidential Debate of 08

Ok, so I know this is way late, but it took me a while to find this video. Back during the presidential race of '08, our campus hosted the first debate between John McCain and Barack Obama. There were news cameras everywhere, and our group got our own segment that was aired on Fox13 News in Memphis. The segment was featuring our "Vote None of the Above" campaign.

YAL on Fox13 in Memphis

Just a side note, we were not the Young Americans for Liberty then, as YAL had not really been formed. Therefore our names were the UM Constitutionalists (the UM standing for University of Mississippi). I just thought some people would like to see it. Take a look!

N-CPAC: Day 1

I can say with almost full confidence that I am hardly surprised by the enormous presence of neocons at CPAC. And that is a major tragedy. Conservativism is all about smaller government, less spending, and "strong family values." Today, I've heard much about those three sacred pillars but little of any real suggestions to carry them out. What was encouraging, however, was the large number of limited government conservatives/Constitutionalists/libertarians present at CPAC. The John Birch Society, Students for Liberty, YAL, and C4L had a smaller but much more vocal and well-informed presence than the neocon majority.

Today's most interesting speech, the opening address, was from Marco Rubio.  Rubio was truly genuine throughout his speech and appears to be, sans a few major issues, quite conservative.  (Note:  This is not an endorsement of Rubio's candidacy for Senate.  YAL does not support or oppose any candidates.)

His speech began with an anecdote about his parents, refugees from Cuba, who came here with literally nothing.
