The Real Nature of Politics: Part1

America's political system works. Period.

Gasp! Shock! Horror! (I can see the hate mail coming already).

But don't get me wrong, I'm not necessarily in favor of the American political process, certainly not as any sort of end. What I am saying, though, is that the person with the best strategy, the best campaign, and the most votes wins.

That, in and of itself, is generally remarkable compared to societies all over the world, and without-doubt veritably-so in often inhumane human history. Right or wrong, the best person wins from a strategic standpoint. It's time we start winning too.

I’m a small business owner - if some politicians decide to tax me even further, I am powerless to stop them if I have no political power. Even if I “educate” my colleagues, the fact of the matter is that as long as the law exists on the books, I will go to jail if I do not pay them. This constant struggle for liberty, though, deserves a much more extensive and articulate explanation than I give.

Mike Rothfeld’s explanation was the hardest lesson I’ve learned thus far in life, but it has also been the most important. The political process wins if we don’t stop it.

You may disagree with Mike ideologically but, strategically, he is right and this movement will fail if we do not heed his words and act accordingly.

A YOUNG GUN'S GUIDE TO SEEKING OFFICE
TO RUN, OR NOT TO RUN, THAT IS THE QUESTION by TOM MURRY

Why are you running for office?

If it takes you more than 30 seconds to articulate a response to this question, then take a step back, and rethink what you're doing. Running for office may not be the job for you.

You are a candidate -- not a professor, not a radio host and not a long-winded televangelist. You do not have the luxury to take all day and explain your positions. Be prepared to answer questions, even the complex ones, in 30 second or less sound bites. This takes practice, but it is essential to effectively convey your message.

FUNDRAISING FOR FREEDOM
FREEDOM ISN'T FREE by DAVID HOYT

Finding money for your Young Americans for Liberty chapter can unlock many new possibilities and take your activism to the next level.  Every member can do the techniques described here.  Fundraising for your YAL chapter is valuable professional experience and a great resume builder.

The best place to start is your school.  The office of student life often has funds available for groups just like yours.  Once you get the ball rolling there, you can move on to the more advanced techniques described below.

Some liberty lovers might philosophically object to using university funds, but think of it this way: Either your chapter receives these allocated resources, or another statist group will use the money to advance their big government agenda on your campus.

FINDING CANDIDATES FOR LIBERTY WINNING WITHOUT COMPROMISE by AARON BITERMAN

One of the most frustrating experiences in electoral politics is getting behind a losing candidate. Having been involved in the liberty movement for over a decade, I fully understand that hurtful, losing experience. I have both recruited and supported losing candidates.

But I have learned my lesson and decided it is time for all of us to stop supportingjust any liberty candidate and start focusing on winning liberty candidates.

The Costs of Principle

Libertarians beware:  The costs of principle are high and difficult to endure.

Jeff Frazee's "Winning on Principle" article is dead on.  The truth of the matter is this:  Winning without principle (Republicans) is no better than losing with principle (libertarians).  The recent attempts to take down Rand Paul's campaign for Senate can serve as good examples of the costs of winning on principle for libertarians.  Republicans know these costs well, that's why they've been more likely to compromise their supposed principles for victory.

For far too long, libertarians have been kept in at the proverbial kiddie-table.  When out of power, each of the major parties has courted the libertarian leanings of the electorate.  Whether it's civil liberties, non-interventionism, fiscal responsibility, or the tea parties, libertarians have been allowed a seat at the adult table only when it pleased the adults.

Announcing the Winning on Principle Newsletter

HeaderFull

Just as Jeff recently reprinted from the first edition of Young American Revolution, we recognize that political success is only honorable if we stand for principle, and that liberty will only prevail if we win politically.

To embody this axiom, the mission of Young Americans for Liberty is to train, educate, and mobilize youth activists committed to "winning on principle."

In order to advance our mission and Jeff's promise in that article, I'm proud to announce this exclusive bi-weekly email titled, "The Winning on Principle Newsletter" that you should have received in your inbox today.

Before you scroll down to read, please allow me to explain its purpose.

The Winning on Principle Newsletter is designed to clearly articulate effective strategies, tactics, and ideas that you can use on campus or on a campaign. Our goal is to equip YAL members with practical political knowledge, so you know how to win with our principled message.

Every other week, YAL's Executive Director, Jeff Frazee, and I will share with you a new lesson from campaign experts and lifelong activists who have dedicated their lives to the political process.

Nearly all of these lessons you will never hear in school. That is why we believe the Winning on Principle Newsletter is a valuable source of information. It's an investment in our movement.

If you truly believe in our cause, then you owe it to our philosophy to learn how to win. And with information like this, win we shall.

The Rand Paul primary campaign has been an exercise in message discipline, image control, and managerial competence that should be broadly admired and studied.
