Whole Foods vs. FTC

I recently posted a piece on the NFL concerning their anti-trust case. Much to my surprise Mises.org posted a piece on a current anti-trust case concerning the Whole Foods merger with Wild Oats. Conveniently they also re-posted an old Rothbard piece with his case to abolish anti-trust laws

Trust Busting Teddy

The Federal Trade Commission is trying to make the case that Whole Foods Inc. will be in violation of the Clayton Act under Section 7 if they were to merge with Wild Oats. Together these two companies operate approximately 300 of the 34,000 supermarkets nationwide.

Rounded up, that would mean that Whole Foods would control approximately .9% (yes .9%) of the supermarket industry IF this deal goes down.

Wal-Mart and Kroger:  You may want to look out; Whole Foods is eating .9% of your organic sections!!! (If they even have one...) The nerve of John Mackey!

Whole Foods CEO John Mackey Speaking Out Again

wholefoods

Whole Foods CEO, John Mackey, is speaking up again. He is one of many prominent libertarian-minded voices that has decided to enter the spotlight and open himself up for criticism. This time it's on the subject of government involvement in climate change and Mackey's disapproval of current proposals.  This comes despite his Whole Foods stores' notoriety of being proactive in the environmental movement. However, according to Mackey, the climate change hype is not supported by sound science.

An article by an independent blogger was published on the Huffington Post yesterday admonishes Mackey's nerve to take issue with climate change science. He notes how he's often fought for Mackey in defense of Whole Foods, but after Mackey's lashing out against universal health care and now climate change, he's lost all patience.

Read the article here.

I chose to engage with a few commenters at the Huffington Post. Read a few of my comments after the jump. Will others follow John Mackey's lead? I hope so.

The national leadership team of the Nationwide Tea Party Coalition this morning announced a series of Tea Party Buycott events designed to support John Mackey and the Whole Foods grocery chain.

The first buycotts, in which tea party supporters will be asked to do their grocery shopping for the week at Whole Foods, will occur Tuesday evening in Dallas and St. Louis.  More are planned to follow, so keep an eye on the site for news of a buycott coming to your area!

Open Letter to Whole Foods Boycotters

Earlier, we mentioned Whole Foods CEO John Mackey's op-ed regarding health care reform. Although we greatly appreciated the article, many others did not -- and are touting a boycott of Whole Foods.

Now, we at YAL will always respect the right of individuals to boycott whatever business they want for whatever reason they wish as a matter of personal liberty. However, I'd like to ask anyone boycotting Whole Foods to consider a few questions first -- after the jump, of course.

Whole Foods CEO Blasts Obamacare

The health care debate has been raging for months now, and all we hear is the government-run health program is the only option for the country.

However, the CEO of Whole Foods has something to say about health care takeover, and it is actually the right solution to the problem:

While we clearly need health-care reform, the last thing our country needs is a massive new health-care entitlement that will create hundreds of billions of dollars of new unfunded deficits and move us much closer to a government takeover of our health-care system. Instead, we should be trying to achieve reforms by moving in the opposite direction—toward less government control and more individual empowerment. Here are eight reforms that would greatly lower the cost of health care for everyone:

• Remove the legal obstacles that slow the creation of high-deductible health insurance plans and health savings accounts (HSAs).
