YAL at Central Washington hosts Dr. Bernstein

Recently, the YAL chapter at Central Washington University hosted Dr. Andrew Bernstein, visiting Professor at Marist College and former Professor State University New York for a talk on the moral efficacy of capitalism.

If you or anyone you know is in the Ellensburg area, check out the CWU chapter

Calling all Northern Washington Activists

From Johnny, president of the YAL chapter at Whatcom Community College:

On November 22 at 7pm, Bellingham City Council will vote on Red Light Cameras and Speed trap cameras. The YAL chapter at WCC and other interested Bellingham residents put enough pressure on the Council to get a unanimous vote to hold a public hearing on this issue. Now the Council is cancelling the public hearing because they "already made up their minds."

If you're interested in joining up with the WCC crew in voicing concerns over Red Light Cameras in Bellingham--or throughout northern/northwestern Washington--Johnny can be reached here

Seattle's KING 5 News Interviews YAL at WCC President

Cities across Northern/Northwest Washington State are considering adding red light cameras to their intersections in the spirit of "making our roads safer." Realistically, it is more of an attempt to raise funds for the cities than it is to prevent reckless driving.

Making banning local red light cameras a large focus, the YAL chapter at Whatcom Community College (Bellingham, WA) has been at the forefront of the "Ban Cams" movement. Recently the chapter president, Johnny Weaver, was interviewed by Seattle's KING 5 News. (If you're impatient, Johnny's interview begins at  the 1:18 mark)

Recruitment Week: University of Washington

West Coast students were back in school this week and back in action to promote liberty! The YAL chapter at the University of Washington-Seattle took advantage of the student activities fair to recruit more members and include one of the school's most active political clubs in an annual school tradition.

Situated next to the socialists, WashPIRG and the Young Democrats, YAL-UW received a few dozen signatures and promoted their upcoming organizational meeting. All in all an excellent start to the group's third year on the UW campus!

Check out some of the photos from the festivities:

Constitution Day at Washington State University

After an evening of chalking and covering campus with fliers, YAL-WSU tabled all day for Constitution Day using the Operation Politically Homeless kit

Enticed by the colorful posters saying "student survey" and the full table display, nearly one hundred students came up to take the world's shortest political quiz. All participants received pocket constitutions and a flier. Any students who landed in "libertarian," "conservative" or "centrist" were asked to sign the signup sheet and received a copy of YAR.

Group membership increased ten-fold and it's shaping up to be a good year for YAL at Washington State University! (Thanks to the WSU College Republicans for their help!)

Since when do Democrats support corporations?

I frequently shop at Bartell Drug Co. more than any other drug store. It's locally run, it has a homey feel to it, good deals and friendly employees.

This may all come to an end if Washington State passes I-1098, which would establish a state income tax "for the wealthy."

In a recent Seattle Times editorial, George Bartell notes how having to pay this tax would dip into the funds he would use to pay his 1700 employees and could eventually mean the end of the company because its competition -- namely major corporations like Walmart -- wouldn't be affected by this state law.

Probably it wasn't the sponsors' intention to favor one group of companies over another. But they are activists. They are not sympathetic to business and don't understand it very well. I-1098 is the result.

YAL at Whatcom Keeping Busy

Liberty starts at home, and YAL members from Whatcom Community College remained active in Bellingham, WA during the summer break.

The WCC chapter was previously honored with being the first political group ever recognized on their campus. Leading the charge, Johnny Weaver and Justin McKay held an event to protest four new red-light cameras and two school-zone cameras

Arguing that law enforcement should focus on protection of people and property, not making money, YAL at WCC teamed up with the local Campaign for Liberty and made their way to City Hall to make their voices heard.

Medical Marijuana Isn't Enough

In the state of Washington, marijuana thieves and medical marijuana users have clashed, sometimes deadly ways:

In the past week, a man in Orting, Wash., near Tacoma, died after he reportedly was beaten while confronting people trying to steal marijuana plants from his property. On Monday, a prominent medical-marijuana activist shot an armed man who is accused of breaking into his home in a suburban area near Seattle where he grows and distributes marijuana plants.

Thank goodness the second victim was able to exercise his second amendment rights. But right now the state government of Washington wants to reexamine "how it regulates the drug." How's this for an idea: just legalize it, all of it. My bet is that violent marijuana robberies would decrease with legalization.

Nullification Making Some Noise in Washington State

A very nice treat found its way into my e-mail this morning: A list of bills introduced onto the House Legislative Floor today included seven bills designed to strengthen the rights of Washington State against the Federal Government. The bills include...

The Washington State Health Care Freedom Act, which nullifies national health care:

A law or rule pertaining to health care shall not directly or indirectly compel any person, employer, or health care provider to participate in any health care system.

The Washington State FireArms Freedom Act, which nullifies national gun laws:

[A] personal firearm, a firearm accessory, or ammunition that is manufactured commercially or privately in Washington and that remains within the borders of Washington is not subject to federal law

as well as acts that would nullify national energy laws and guarantee rights to constitutional government, self-defense, and other acts designed to combat federal intrusion into states' rights. Go Washington (State)!
