You Are Now Leaving a Free Speech Area

Each week, I make an effort to spread the liberty message at my university, so in todays' edition of my column at my college newspaper The News Record, I wrote on the presence of "free speech zones" on college campuses and the effects that they have on a students' ability to speak freely on campus.

Here's a quick glance:

In fact, just the concept of a free speech zone feels like it was lifted straight from George Orwell’s classic dystopian novel “1984.”

“The idea of a free speech zone is Orwellian in nature,” said Ryan Printy, vice president of UC Young Americans for Liberty.

Just the mere existence of free speech zones shows just how far we have strayed from our country’s founding constitutional principles. The First Amendment was meant to protect our right to speak freely from government intervention, regardless of your location.

Health Care Freedom in Ohio Hits Temporary Roadblock

When the Ohio Liberty Council, a group of grassroots organizations including the University of Cincinnati YAL and the Ohio State University YAL, set out to correct the wrongdoings of health care reform by proposing an amendment to the Ohio constitution, it was no secret that it would be a tough battle. Now the group’s efforts have been met with a temporary roadblock.

Language of the proposed amendment was rejected by the Ohio Ballot Board last week, prompting the Council to potentially pursue legal action by asking the Ohio Supreme Court to reverse the board’s decision.

Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner and the Ohio Ballot Board today ruled a proposed constitutional amendment aimed at protecting Ohioans from forthcoming health care regulations should be split into two parts. As a result, the board rejected the proposed amendment and told its sponsor, the Ohio Liberty Council, to start over.

Healthcare Debate Not over in Ohio

In my further attempts to spread the liberty message on my campus, I wrote on the efforts of the Ohio Liberty Council to combat "Obamacare" which appeared in today's edition of my column for The News Record. Although these efforts have a long way to go, I really hope that my fellow buckeyes can get behind this movement and allow us Ohioans to take a stand against the intrusive health care "reform."

No sooner after President Obama’s pen lifted from signing the health care reform bill into law, efforts to combat its effects were quickly set in motion by many groups across the nation.

Those efforts are now underway in Ohio.

Last week, the Ohio Liberty Council, a collection of grassroots organizations including the University of Cincinnati Young Americans for Liberty, initiated a statewide movement to allow Ohioans to vote on a proposed state constitutional amendment this fall. A statewide petition drive might soon be underway in order to gather the near 400,000 overall signatures needed to eventually get the issue on the November ballot.
