Tax Day Protests

Tax Day

Although many college students do not worry as much about paying taxes as their elders do, Tax Day (April 18th this year) is still a great time to plan activism on campus because of the attention the media pays to activities that are planned on this day.

You may remember that the 2009 "Tax Day Tea Party" was one of the first that branched out from the 2007 Boston Tea Party during the Ron Paul Presidential campaign.  In fact, there are probably events already being planned in your area by local tea parties that you can get involved with.

Check out this list of events already being planned at FreedomConnect.com, or this list at Tea Party Patriots, and also try going to MeetUp.com and searching for "Tax Day" in your area.

UPDATE: "Fed Up with the Fed" is another National event happening on Tax Day that integrates the Federal Reserve.  Visit their website to see events being planned in your area.

Tax Day Events: Auburn

Auburn University held a table at the East Alabama Patriots Tax Day event this past Thursday. Notice on the right side of the picture below the large death and taxes sign. It makes for a great visual at any YAL event!

Check out the massive national debt display Auburn is holding on their campus tomorrow!

Tax Day Ideas: ASU SFL

In this video, ASU's chapter of Students for Liberty give a great interview to a student on campus about taxes. It's another example of what campuses can do for their own Tax Day events this Thursday.

Tax Day Ideas: National Debt Display

Make a massive display on your campus of maybe the largest monkey on the legislators' back -- the national debt.

National Debt

  • Make the display on a large poster or a large piece of cardboard.
  • Put an individual number on 14 seperate pieces of paper. Line them up and you should have a pretty big display.
  • Hand out literature about the debt and how even though we're taxed more and more our debt continually increases.

Be creative; there are plenty of possibilities that can be used to make the large national debt display.

Tax Day Ideas: Post Office

This activism idea for Tax Day is an obvious one, yet really effective. There is no place on April 15th where you will find more people sympathetic to your cause than at your local post office (Tea Party events being an obvious exception). The post office is full of irritated, last-second tax payers and is a hot spot for local news.

  • Before you hold the event, send a press advisory to your local news outlets.  If you write the release, CampusReform.org will send it out for you for free to a complete media list for your area.
  • Canvass the area with anti-tax and YAL signs -- "Taking your money is bipartisan," for instance.
  • Hand out fliers about taxes and what your YAL group is about.
  • Get community members' contact info by using the YAL petition to repeal ObamaCare.

The petition, along with other exciting things going on in regards to Tax Day can be found here. Make sure you share your Tax Day activism ideas on the blog or with activism@yaliberty.org.

Tax Day Ideas

Friends of YAL,

If you have any activism ideas in regards to Tax Day, please share them on the blog or send them into activism@yaliberty.org. Don't be shy; the more ideas we receive the better.

Here's my first idea. Think you can do better?

IRS THUGZ

IRS THUGGIN'

The IRS THUGZ will "make it rain" with the tax payer's money:

  • Members dress up as IRS agents
  • Buy a lot of fake money at a dollar store or some kind of thrift store
  • "Make it rain" with the money whenever you have a high amount of student traffic walking by
  • Play the "make it rain" song or some other thuggin' music
  • Signs and handouts about Gov't/IRS going wild with YOUR money
