YAL at Mississippi College Conducts Straw Poll

Our YAL chapter conducted a straw poll of the GOP presidential candidates in our cafeteria on October 18th. 149 students participated and Congressman Ron Paul won by a large margin. The whole purpose of the straw poll, though, was really to promote our YAL chapter and let people know about our hosting a viewing of the Republican debate on CNN that night in one of the dorm lobbies.

Straw Poll

The straw poll helped us get our name out there and generated a lot of interest on campus. If there are other chapters out there looking for ideas to engage with the campus (especially at a smaller school like ours), I would definitely suggest co-sponsoring a straw poll with your campus's College Republicans, Young Democrats, or other campus political group. It's a great way to build a relationship with students who are already politically active. And it's important to connect with those groups with whom you can build a coalition on like-minded issues. In this case, we were able to meet a lot of College Republicans and even recruit a few for YAL meetings.

The one thing to be careful about is giving the impression that your YAL chapter is just another wing of whichever political group you work with. I could see this being a bigger problem at a bigger school with a large and active College Republicans, for instance. People might just assume your group is some sort of Tea Party Republican group, if they don't read any of your materials or come talk to you. So if a student aprroaches your table, make sure to be clear about what you do and don't believe -- perhaps using some of these YAL palmcards. Also, emphasize that the goal is to get people interested in politics. So in other words, if it were the Democrats selecting their candidate, then the YAL chapter would be doing the same thing. The goal is to raise awareness and gain publicity. As for YAL at MC, I think it worked!

2010 SRLC: A Narrow Loss for Team Liberty's Starting Quarterback

votepaul

Ron Paul lost the 2010 SRLC straw poll because of me. I didn't go to cast the deciding vote. I should have bought a plane ticket and sacrificed a weekend in my beloved New York City to be there for my own freedoms, and to be there for Ron Paul, a man who has dedicated his life to restoring liberty for all of us.

Now that I've acknowledged my own fault in this loss, allow me to examine a few other thoughts of mine on the campaign to unite freedom lovers come the 2012 presidential election.

Subject: Gary Johnson

Gary Johnson might be one of the best modern day governors I know of. What little I know about him seems to be favorable and we should definitly keep tabs on him for the future.

Ron Paul Loses by 1 (Yes, ONE) Vote in SRLC Straw Poll

Reporting outside the Hilton Conference center in the Big Easy:

Just as the headline reads, Ron Paul lost the 2010 Presidential Straw Poll by one single vote to former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney.  This one vote, however, really comes off as a big win for Congressman Paul--Evangelicals for Mitt spent tens of thousands trying to influence voters in the straw poll by giving away Romney books, piggy-banks indicating fiscal responsibility and massive advertising posters of Mitt all throughout the conference.

Ron Paul, on the other hand, merely had a few supporters with homemade signs.

As I attended the 2010 SRLC to spread the mission of YAL with dozens of other liberty lovers from the South, I could not but help to notice how many people were starting to support the liberty movement. Although a majority of these people did not vote for Ron Paul in 2008, there appeared some sort of changing sentiment, rising, and fast, for this man and his ideas of, well...big-tent, really, really--really small-government.

Results from the SRLC 2010 straw-poll:

Newt Gingrich    18%
Mike Huckabee  4%
Gary Johnson    1%
Sarah Palin       18%
Ron Paul            24% (438 votes)
Tim Pawlenty   3%
Mike Pence      3%
Mitt Romney    24% (439 votes)
Rick Santorum    2%

*YAL does not support or endorse any candidates for public office.

If Ron Paul continues to win straw polls, the GOP won't do them anymore.

So childish!

Hat tip to Steven St.Jean.  Note:  YAL does not support or oppose any candidate for office.

POLITICO: Who Should Have Won The CPAC Straw Poll?

Politico.com has jumped right on the marginalization bandwagon when it comes to Ron Paul winning the CPAC 2010 Straw Poll. Their poll today is asking who should have won the CPAC Straw Poll- a puzzling move, considering how active Dr. Paul's supporters are online.

It seems to me that Dr. Paul's win has not sat well with old media, and neoconservatives- they've dusted off and put back in use their old media guide to attacking Ron Paul.

I propose we let our voice be heard in the Politico poll. Who's with me?

Ron Paul Wins CPAC Straw Poll!

Ron Paul has won the CPAC straw poll -- arguably by a land slide!  You can check out the full poll, but here are the presidential poll results:

Thinking ahead to the 2012 Presidential election, who would you vote for as the next Republican nominee for President?

  • Ron Paul -- 31%
  • Mitt Romney -- 22%
  • Sarah Palin -- 7%
  • Tim Pawlenty -- 6%
  • Mike Pence -- 5%
  • Newt Gingrich -- 4%
  • Mike Huckabee -- 4%
  • Mitch Daniels -- 2%
  • Rick Santorum -- 2%
  • John Thune -- 2%
  • Haley Barbour -- 1%
  • Other -- 5%
  • Undecided -- 6%

Yes, Ron Paul got more votes than the next two candidates combined.  Part of that is awesome organization on the part of Campaign for Liberty and Young Americans for Liberty's staff and committed volunteers.  And part of it, I think, is that Ron Paul's message of liberty can't be stopped -- even at CPAC.
