Task Force: Biola University -- Liberty? We Can Dig It.

A group of SoCal YALers had some free time over this last week during our spring break. So what better way to spend the sunny Southern Californian days than by spreading the message of Liberty?  And where better in Southern California to do that than the Mean Streets of LA?

Our target: Biola University, located in La Mirada. It’s a smaller, private Christian university situated right inside LA county, with around 6,000 students.

There are lots of smaller private universities in Los Angeles, so why did we choose here? Well, the answer is fairly simple, and came as a bit of a surprise to us:  Liberty is very, very strong on this campus.

We started the day by proceeding to the center of campus, and set up our table in true YAL style, populated with everything from palm cards to pocket Constitutions to other assorted free literature. In addition, we ran the one and only World’s Smallest Political Quiz, as part of Operation Politically Homeless.

And as soon as we were up and running, we were overwhelmed by the amount of positive response that we received. And by overwhelmed I refer not only to the amount of joy that we received, but the number of people. There were so many people lining up to take our Quiz that we had a line just for people waiting on pens! And even those who were apolitical or disagreed with us came up to give us the opportunity to tell them what we’re about.

With our student body returning from Spring Break, our very special officer Ken I. Seymour meets and greets the kids the only way he knows how: shattering their constitutional rights with a smile. 

After a few more unconsented searches, sexual assault filings, and a case of radiation poisoning from the TSA scanner, our crew began dishing out verbal knowledge of the evil that is the TSA. Students came up asking what our scanner was and what we had written on it (from the 4th Amendment to examples of excessive government spending and violations of the Constitution) and most agreed with us that the TSA should be done away with.

Event wise, we had a great success and a lot of attention was grabbed with the big display. We had a handful of people sign up for Young Americans for Liberty at NC State and had a great time while doing it!

We set up a table on the Library Mall, which is a major intersection between 2 major thoroughfares on campus and is where we usually do our events. We had our banner out, a couple of signs that said "Titty Squeeze Administration" and "Testicle Safety Assessor." We got about 10 new members, but we were really short staffed. I (Aaron) wore the TSA costume most of the day and asked passers by that if they could tell me what the 4th Amendment was and if they did they'd win some beads. We also just handed out beads and asked people where they were going for spring break and then informed them that the TSA violates their 4th Amendment rights every time they go through the airport. We had a few great conversations with a couple of individuals and groups. All in all I think we had a pretty great impact while having a really fun time.  

We even got YAL's banner plugged in a local story!

Government Gone Wild! at DU

Young Americans for Liberty at the University of Denver held our first Activism event this past week after forming only three weeks ago.  Students returning fresh off of their spring break were greeted by our TSA official Ken I. Seymore, and our Government Gone Wild!

Liberty was in the air as curious students participated in our event by walking through our mock scanner and writing their feelings down about the TSA agency.  Over the 6 hours that we tabled and conversed with students, 18 were interested enough to sign-up for our weekly newsletter.

TSA agent Seymore excitedly (and creepily!) handed out Mardi Gras beads to participating students, while other YAL members handed out informative pamphlets and explained the ineffectiveness of the TSA, as well as the unconstitutional acts carried out by our government.

With this successful activism event behind us, YAL-DU is officially up and running and looking forward to our April All-Out Activism events!

Introducing the Illinois Liberty Leadership Forum!

Next weekend, students from across Illinois, Indiana, and Wisconsin will gather at the University of Illinois in Urbana Champaign to network and discuss how to grow their student organizations! This is a must attend if you are a leader, or hope to become a leader, in the student liberty movement! The Young Americans for Liberty state chairs in Illinois have spent weeks planning to make this one of the most valuable weekends of the spring. There will be panels and discussions hosted by leaders in the student liberty movement that will help you grow your club, and be a more effective activist! This event is open to all students interested in becoming leaders in the movement, not just those who already are!

The weekend kicks off with a welcome reception and social at 6pm on Friday, April 13th. The next morning we’ll get down to business at 10am, going through the day before wrapping up with another social on Saturday night! Young Americans for Liberty at the University of Illinois will be providing couch space, and Young Americans for Liberty at the University of Chicago will be organizing carpools from Chicagoland. Moreno Valley College YAL celebrates a first with TSA protest

The Moreno Valley College Young Americans for Liberty held their first activism event this March. We reserved the space, ordered the kit, posted flyers, and set up our checkpoint. Despite having technical problems with our scanner, the event was a huge success. We got the campus interested in our chapter's activism, signed up some potential members, and had a lot of fun.

CSUSB YAL chapter president Andrew Petrolino helped us build the mock scanner and put on the event, making this the first of what we hope to be a long series of collaborations between our chapters. We were also joined by California state chair Angad Walia, who gave us some really great advice on engaging students and running an effective table.

The Young Americans for Liberty at the University of South Florida came to the rescue of the Constitution yet again, helping to educate our fellow USF Bulls on their rights, right before classes were dismissed for Spring Break.

For our “Government Gone Wild” activism project, we tabled outside of our campus library, thus coercing our fellow students to be “stripped” of their ignorance, and even “forced” to learn their rights.

Students who visited our event were greeted by plenty of interesting (and mildly perverse) signs, then educated on their rights, as well as the YAL platform. Interested students were also invited to attend our screening of “10 Rules for Dealing With Police,” the night of our final tabling event.

CSUF YAL Raises Awareness about TSA; Gets Trolled Hard

Despite careful planning and preparation for our TSA event here at Cal State-Fullerton, some unforeseen problems arose that polluted a majority of our efforts.  My hope is that our experience can be used as an example if any other chapters run into the same type of problem.

We booked a corner of the quad weeks in advance for our event.  We had a late night chalking campaign the night before where we wrote slogans about the TSA along with our facebook address.  We had many signs for the event ready to go when the date arrived.  On the morning of the event, we set up our table and had everything in its place.  We did everything we were supposed to do.

Government Gone Wild At MTSU

mtlibertyFor MTSU's Government Gone Wild event, we tabled 5 days this past week Monday - Friday 3/26 - 3/30. On Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday we had our fake body scanner and "Ken I. Seymore" officers on patrol. Friday we did some additional recruitment tabling. After Monday we made use of a pleasant shady spot to make our table inviting, though this is make our documentation shady as well.

We filled up 4 pages and got 66 signups and we were interviewed by MT TV, the campus news station. The content, I believe, has not aired yet. But I'll update this post when that content is available.

BGSU Inaugural Meeting Success

On March 22, Bowling Green State University's Young Americans for Liberty celebrated their founding and a successful recruiting season with new recruits and local liberty-minded speakers. With the help of Vladimir's Powerpoint, YAL's educational resources, various copies of YAR, and some liberty swag, BGSUYAL hosted and treated students to free pizza and a healthy dose of freedom education!

Students were very receptive, asked questions, and were comfortable with participating in discussion. Of course, they all appreciated the pizza as well. The entire university, from the administration and faculty to the students and media publications, was incredibly welcoming to our new organization and BGSUYAL is sure to have a bright future with strong leadership for years to come. Our meeting was such a success that the university's newspaper wrote a front-page story about our organization and the meeting itself.
