Freedom starts at home

There is quiet self-contradiction developing in the Tea Party movement that needs addressing, for it is a contradiction that, if left uncorrected, could turn a force with truly revolutionary potential into one more element of an oligarchic political stasis. This movement, which as a culture attempts in many ways to be an imitation of the founders, is steering away from its origins and failing to take hold of perhaps the single most important insight of the entire American Revolution – that national change is the result of local change, not its cause.

It was not homesickness that led Thomas Jefferson to return to his home state of Virginia and decline a reelection to Congress after penning the Declaration of Independence. At the forefront in Jefferson’s mind on July 5, 1776, was not the welfare of the new nation as a whole, but rather the welfare of his home state of Virginia. For Jefferson, Virginia was not simply one part of the ultimate goal of the United States, but in fact an ultimate goal in itself. It was at the local level that Jefferson knew previsions for the future freedom of his fellow Virginians had to be made.

Palin vs. Paul

Here's an interesting article from Politico about the division of support among the Tea Party crowd. Personally, I am no fan of Sarah Palin and the hyper-evangelical social conservatives that tend to throw her their support. However, looking past the social side, these supporters will gladly throw support to the libertarian camp on fiscal issues. There seems to be a tendency within libertarian circles to remain very hostile to those who may have a difference of opinion and I think many political bridges have been burned unnecessarily because of this.

If we want to continue to grow our movement we must be willing to work with those who may not see eye to eye on every issue with us. While I disagree with many of the social conservative points of view, I would still contend that it remains vitally important to forge alliances with those individuals who can get behind us on bringing fiscal sanity back to an out of control federal government.

2010 SRLC: A Narrow Loss for Team Liberty's Starting Quarterback

votepaul

Ron Paul lost the 2010 SRLC straw poll because of me. I didn't go to cast the deciding vote. I should have bought a plane ticket and sacrificed a weekend in my beloved New York City to be there for my own freedoms, and to be there for Ron Paul, a man who has dedicated his life to restoring liberty for all of us.

Now that I've acknowledged my own fault in this loss, allow me to examine a few other thoughts of mine on the campaign to unite freedom lovers come the 2012 presidential election.

Subject: Gary Johnson

Gary Johnson might be one of the best modern day governors I know of. What little I know about him seems to be favorable and we should definitly keep tabs on him for the future.

Ron Paul Loses by 1 (Yes, ONE) Vote in SRLC Straw Poll

Reporting outside the Hilton Conference center in the Big Easy:

Just as the headline reads, Ron Paul lost the 2010 Presidential Straw Poll by one single vote to former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney.  This one vote, however, really comes off as a big win for Congressman Paul--Evangelicals for Mitt spent tens of thousands trying to influence voters in the straw poll by giving away Romney books, piggy-banks indicating fiscal responsibility and massive advertising posters of Mitt all throughout the conference.

Ron Paul, on the other hand, merely had a few supporters with homemade signs.

As I attended the 2010 SRLC to spread the mission of YAL with dozens of other liberty lovers from the South, I could not but help to notice how many people were starting to support the liberty movement. Although a majority of these people did not vote for Ron Paul in 2008, there appeared some sort of changing sentiment, rising, and fast, for this man and his ideas of, well...big-tent, really, really--really small-government.

Results from the SRLC 2010 straw-poll:

Newt Gingrich    18%
Mike Huckabee  4%
Gary Johnson    1%
Sarah Palin       18%
Ron Paul            24% (438 votes)
Tim Pawlenty   3%
Mike Pence      3%
Mitt Romney    24% (439 votes)
Rick Santorum    2%

*YAL does not support or endorse any candidates for public office.

Sarah Goes South

Having just watched bits of the Sarah Palin speech at the Southern Republican Leadership Conference, it's worth confirming what was already known:  She has charisma.

Palin opened her speech with a "thank you" to the service industry employees of New Orleans who have been helping the conference to run smoothly, taking note of the hardships endured by the city after Hurricane Katrina.  She followed up with a "Who Dat!" rallying cry; a phrase that became popular in the city during the New Orleans Saints' recent run to the Superbowl.

She has a knack for humanizing herself, winning over her audience with charm and down-to-earth fellowship.  While this sort of posturing is often routine in the political realm, Sarah's seems genuine.  This certainly adds to her appeal and sets her apart as a political figure.

The Obnoxious Emanuel

rIt's no secret that Obama's Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel is known for his big, gutter mouth.

Last week, The Wall Street Journal reported that Emanual commented in a private meeting with liberal special interest groups that Blue Dog Democrats opposing the health care reform bill were "F***ing retarded."

The situation got much worse when former Alaska Govenor Palin asked Obama to fire Emanuel for using the R-word ("retarded"), and equating it with a racial slur. Obviosuly, to Ms. Palin and other parents of special children, the R-word is extremely offensive. Palin then wrote on her Facebook page a post titled, "Are You Capable of Decency, Rahm Emanuel?":

Just as we’d be appalled if any public figure of Rahm’s stature ever used the 'N-word' or other such inappropriate language, Rahm’s slur on all God’s children with cognitive and developmental disabilities — and the people who love them — is unacceptable," adding, "it's heartbreaking."

However, should we be surprised by this?

Palin Endorses Rand Paul

Sarah Palin injected herself into another 2010 campaign Monday, with her endorsement of Rand Paul, son Rep. Ron Paul (R-Tex.), who is running for a U.S. Senate seat in Kentucky.

"Governor Palin is providing tremendous leadership as the Tea Party movement and constitutional conservatives strive to take our country back," Rand Paul said in a statement. "Sarah Palin is a giant in American politics. I am proud to receive her support."

Paul also acknowledged that he "has received a generous donation from Governor Palin's PAC."

They're Back -- Palin To Campaign For McCain's Reelection

s(Sigh)

I suppose this is Palin's gift to John McCain for choosing her as his VP pick? Maybe, maybe not. However, this does speak plenty about her creadibilty as an alleged "conservative" -- not to mention how much of a contradiction it will now be for her to speak at coming Tea Parties.

Either way, does anyone know what her positions are in domestic/foreign policy? I know I don't; and in reality most people don't either.  She's always been heavy on style and light on substance, so why is she embraced by the Tea Party crowd as a principled supporter of small government?  She's campaignin for someone who clearly isn't.

What will Big Government Republicans do NOW?

According to US News and World Report, citing an anonymous source, Sarah Palin has declined an invitation to speak at this year's CPAC.  It will be interesting to see how this plays out, as I'm sure conservatives will be questions her motives for declining the invitation in the coming weeks.

Palin undermining her own popularity in this manner is like a Christmas gift, just a few weeks later.

2010 Venn Diagram

I'm not saying I agree with this, and I'm definitely unsure about the wisdom of putting Sarah Palin's name on the same chart as Ron Paul's.  But it's interesting.  Thoughts?
