GOP Riding the Wave of Libertarian Enthusiasm

Glenn Greenwald is definitely one of the most indispensable commentators around when it comes to exposing horrible atrocities carried out by the United States government. I have always been impressed by his ability to see through partisan politics and call out Democrats and Republicans alike in areas dealing with the most important of civil liberties. However, I was even more impressed with his insight in one of his more recent articles, The GOP’s “Small Government” Tea-Party Fraud.

In it, Greenwald, once again, exposes the GOP for its latest attempt at deception in order to gain power. I guess it shouldn’t come as a surprise when you consider Greenwald was the man who saw through every national security lie that sprang forth from the GOP’s mouth during the Bush years.  However, Greenwald expresses a clear understanding of what the GOP is up to:

There’s a major political fraud underway:  the GOP is once again donning their libertarian, limited-government masks in order to re-invent itself and, more important, to co-opt the energy and passion of the Ron-Paul-faction that spawned and sustains the ”tea party” movement.  The Party that spat contempt at Paul during the Bush years and was diametrically opposed to most of his platform now pretends to share his views.

Brown's Victory a Vote of Anger with Government

Scott Brown isn't great on all issues, but his win is interesting because it shows that people are at least putting some thought into voting.  Places like California and New England will no longer automatically vote blue, but may be willing to elect candidates based on more than party.  As Mish Shedlock explains,

Brown's victory was not so much a vote for Brown, but a vote out of anger, anger of backroom deals, anger over jobs, anger over wars, anger over special deals for politicians and unions, anger over banks, and most importantly, anger because "Yes We Can" morphed into "Business As Usual, Only Worse"....

Without a doubt, Brown sent a message to Obama specifically and Democrats in general that the public is fed up. Indeed, this special election shows Obama's message is as out of place as a bullfrog on the lead microphone at an opera.

Read more here, and keep in mind Shedlock's conclusion:  "[R]est assured the music will fall on deaf ears unless you act."  Brown's win will destroy the Democrats' filibuster-proof majority in the Senate.  This will undoubtedly be good in the short term -- and may stop universal health care from passing -- but in the long term we need change more substantial than this.

Before getting your hopes up too high on the recent bailout vote

Consider this. Yes, the Senate crushed the automotive bailout bill passed by Congress. However, and if I’m not mistaken, this was more of a vote to test the waters to see where the vote tally stood and didn’t really count.
