NLRB Trying to Impose Federal Labor Laws on Religious Universities

The first amendment has been widely interpreted as mandating the seperation of church and state, as have many successive court cases and tax codes that have sought to keep government out of people's faiths and vice-versa.

However, the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) thinks differently. Since this mandated legal separation prevents Catholic schools from complying with federal labor regulations, the NLRB came up with a plan to increase its pro-union clout in religious institutions:  ruling some schools aren't religious enough to be exempt.

On May 26, the Chicago branch of the NLRB ruled that St. Xavier University, a small college founded by the Sisters of Mercy in Chicago, was "not sufficiently religious" to claim federal labor law exemptions. This is on the heels of a similar decision against Manhattan College in New York City, which was founded by the Christian Brothers. That case has gone to the national board for an appeal, which is widely expected to be denied.

The case involving the Chicago university is expected to make its way to the First District Appeals Court which resulted in victories in 2002 and 2008 for religious organizations. In fact one Supreme Court case, NRLB v. Catholic Bishops of Chicago (1979) established that any NRLB oversight of the school is equal to an inquiry into the religiousness of it, and is therefore unconstitutional. Helping out the cause of the university is Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer's position that if a school declares itself a "religious educational institution", that is all the government needs to know for it to be classified as such.   More at www.silverunderground.com.

Snyder v. Phelps: Right to Free Speech vs. Right to Privacy

image

"It is the obligation of Westboro Baptist Church to put the cup of God's fury to America's lips, and cause America to drink it. And you will drink it!"

- Rev. Fred Phelps, Westboro Baptist Church

The Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) started hearing arguments in a highly controversial case on Wednesday. Snyder v. Phelps  is arguably the highest profile free speech case that the High Court will hear this term.

Jihad, Jesus, and Justification

I knew CPAC 2010 would bring a few disappointments, one of them being the neoconservative atmosphere that has sucked the life out of both the Republican Party and the wealth of the nation. One event stuck out like a sore thumb:  the "Political Third Rail: Jihad." Needless to say, after hearing two speakers talk about how "Jihad is real in all Muslims" and how the United States must deal with this ideological threat, I couldn't help but voluntarily walk out in disgust and outrage.

There was one thing all of these neoconservatives missed, and that was evidently the understanding of culture. After playing their propaganda videos of Muslims chanting "La Illah Illih Allah" and wishing death to the West (because that's just what all Arabs do, right?), everyone missed what was actually on the picket signs:  "Stop sending money to Israel," "Remove US presence in the Middle East," and "End occupation." I think we can all agree that every religious sect has its crazies and fundamentalists, but perhaps they would have less to protest about and less to hate if our foreign policy wasn't so imperialistic.

And speaking of religious fundamentalists, the lady who sat next to me was clasping her hands together and shouting out "Amen!" every time a speaker said something not-so-politically-correct about Arabs that I wish not to say on this website.

Hey, at least Ron Paul has it right!

RON PAUL: "CIA helped radicalize [terrorists]"

ED SCHULTZ: What evidence do you have, congressman, and why do you believe that Al-Qaida would be less aggressive to kill Americans if we weren’t doing international intervention and going and fighting them on their soil and going after them?

RON PAUL: Well, they didn’t exist till we got over there. We helped create them. As a matter of fact, our CIA helped radicalize the Madrasah schools because we were allies with them when we were trying to fight the Soviets and put them out of Afghanistan. So yes, we helped initiate that because they understood our argument. “Hey look, these communists are bad people and they’re invading your country, they want to take over.”
