Fall semester recruitment at Case Western Reserve University

On Saturday, August 27, our chapter participated in the Student Activities Fair along with more than 120 other student organizations (one of which, we're happy to say, is the brand-new campus chapter of Students for Sensible Drug Policy) at Case Western Reserve University.

With so many other groups vying for attention, of course, with most passersby we had only seconds each, if that. So we whipped out our schwag (and a cheeseburger!):

Chapter President looking presidential, left; chapter Treasurer eating cheeseburger, right

The books (from left to right: End the Fed and The Revolution: A Manifesto by Ron Paul; The Empire Has No Clothes by Ivan Eland; and Common Sense Economics by Gwartney, Stroup, Lee, and Ferrarini) were quick attention-getters; they also gave those already familiar with them a quick idea of what we stand for.

Great Video Resources for New YAL Recruits

D.C based lawyer and author Jacob Huebert has released a relatively new video explaining the concept of legal plunder in a very entertaining way.  The new video is second in a series based on the basic tenets of the liberty philosophy.  The expanded edition of Huebert's first video (previously mentioned on the YAL blog) is great as well.

These videos are a great resource for YAL members to use with new recruits in the upcoming semester!

  2. UC-San Diego -- YAL at UCSD will receive a $200 activism grant, 5 free YAL t-shirts!  You can read their activism report here.
  3. Cal State-Fullerton -- YAL at CSUF will receive a $100 activism grant, 5 free YAL t-shirts!  You can read their activism reports here and here.

Honorable mention also goes to Auburn University, Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, and the University of Central Florida.

Young Americans for Liberty at UCF Feed the Politically Homeless

The University of Central Florida chapter of Young Americans for Liberty conducted another succesful student outreach campaign.  Thanks to the support of our friends at Advocates for Self Government, we were able to bring Operation Politically Homeless(OPH) to our campus.  We had over 100 participants from the student body conduct the "Worlds Smallest Political Quiz" and as you can see below, the ideas of liberty are very prevelant on the UCF campus.

Compare

This was our second time using the OPH kit as an outreach tool.   However, this time around we not only offered the "Politically Homeless" a new place to live, we offered them free popsicles.

Up and Coming YAL Chapter: Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College

This report from Corey Adkison, president of the enthusiastic new YAL chapter at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College.  It's awesome to see this chapter so active, especially when compared to those on campuses of greater than 20,000 students.  Way to set the bar high!

Check out their group here.

This past Thursday our chapter had a bake sale displaying the problems with overregulation and taxation on American businesses. We created a price menu for “American made” cookies and “foreign” imports, we priced the domestic cookies at $1.50 per bag while foreign imports were $0.50 a bag.

When people came up and asked what the difference between the cookies were, we showed them a price guide showing the impact sin taxes, sales taxes, corporate taxes, and the price of regulations had on our “domestic” cookies. We ended up making sixty-one dollars from the bake sale.

1

We also had an Operation Politically Homeless chart and had about forty-five people take the quiz.  Overall the scores were scattered, but we had about ten people score in the libertarian section, and about four more in the liberal or conservative borderline.

2

We collected about thirty emails for our email list and handed out twenty or so copies of Young American Revolution. This event brought five new members to our meeting later that evening, and we spoke with fifty to sixty people in total.  With school enrollment just around 1,000, I think it went a long way towards getting our name out to the school population.

Cal-State Fullerton Recruitment Update

From Susie Carnet:

On Wednesday, February 2, 2011 and Thursday, February 3, 2011, five CSUF students gathered at the biggest recruitment day on campus, "Discoverfest." Many students were receptive to the idea of a Liberty-minded organization on campus. In just six hours ( on two different days) we received about 50 new sign ups.

We were approached by a student coordinator to invite CSUF-YAL to participate in an event for 50 high school students to learn more about what CSUF clubs have to offer. The event, "Gear Up" will be held from 4-9 pm on March 18 and will consist of a scavenger hunt, various games, and exposing our chapter to new incoming freshmen.

We look forward to exposing CSUF students to the ideas of liberty and getting students active in liberty-minded activism.

YAL@Clayton: This Semester So Far -- Recruitment & More!

Things have been going well for YAL at Clayton State University (just south of Atlanta, GA)! For starters, we were just awarded 'Best New Student Organization' at Clayton State!

award

We have grown our ranks by over 50 new like-minded students this semester -- not bad for a student body of about 6,500 -- by doing the following things:

Recruitment for YAL @ AU

In our recruiting efforts at YAL @ Auburn University, we decided to bring out our shining star...or something like that. Actually, the national debt is a rather sad thing, but you get the picture. Our 48' long display always gets the attention of other students and never fails to start a conversation or so.

ND2

We brought in some new members and were able to reconnect with a few of our others. One of our new members, along with 5 others, made the 14-hour journey to CPAC to help promote liberty and send a message regarding the 2012 presidential election!

YAL National, thank you for the activism kit! We look forward to using it to promote YAL, free markets, and liberty!

Spring 2011 Recruitment

YAL @ AU opened the semester off BIG again with our over sized display of the over sized national debt! As usual, we enjoyed engaging in meaningful discussions with the student body regarding issues of the repercussions of out of control spending and its likelihood of adding to the out of control debt, coupled with detramental possibilty of control inflation.

NBC 38 from Columbus, Georgia interviewed our very own Jonathan Newman regarding our display. We have requested a copy of the broadcast, which we wil be receiving shortly.
