Diablo Valley College YAL takes over...

With chapter officers fulfilling leadership positions in student government and the campus newspaper, DVC YAL looks forward to its second semester on campus. DVC YAL tabled February 21st and 22nd of 2012, with more than 200 students expressing interest in our organization. The greatest challange DVC YAL faces at the moment is finding a meeting time that accomodates each member's schedule.

This semester YAL is managing the campus' Economics Tutoring Program and providing tutoring services 7 days a week. Yes, even on weekends! DVC YAL at the moment is planning an event with a Registered Nurse now GOP Candidate for Congress regarding Obamacare. YAL does not oppose or support any candidate for political office.

Education Chair Tim Khousnoutdinov spreads Liberty by engaging the student body.

YAL at UVA semester update

Young Americans for Liberty at the University of Virginia got off to a great start this semester.  As part of the recruitment drive, we tabled at the winter activities fair and drew a large crowd of interested students with amazing cupcakes.

Further, members also tabled on Crony Capitalism day, passing out YAL literature, anti-cronyism literature, and dum dums to passing students.  Later this semester, YAL@UVA plans to continue to expand in numbers as well as hosting liberty speakers and other events!

SRU YAL Spring 2012 Recruitment Drive Results in over 800 New Sign Ups!

event

The Slippery Rock University Young Americans for Liberty had two goals coming back from Christmas break:  recruitment and increasing our exposure on campus. This was to be accomplished with strategic and aggresive tabling, creative advertising, and high-spirited activism. After three long and hard-fought weeks of recruitment, it's evident YAL @ SRU far exceed our goals.

Let's go straight to the numbers:

  • 7 days of tabling (2 hours each day = 14 hours total!)
  • OVER 800 NEW SIGN-UPS!!!
  • 10 professional yard signs
  • 500 professional, custom YAL pens
  • 50 professional flyers
  • 4 professional posters
  • Crony Capitalism is Phony Capitalism Event
  • A great first informational meeting
  • One team, one dream!

Even before classes started, the leadership team planned the biggest, most successful recruitment drive ever. The strategy was simple:  table in difference locations and use creative ways to advertise around campus. YAL @ SRU tabled in many different locations including the Union, Bailey Library, and Boozel Dining Hall. This resulted in over 800 new newsletter recipients, increasing YAL's influence on campus

BGSU Recruitment Drive (Spring 2012)

The Bowling Green State University Young Americans for Liberty kicked-off recruitment efforts last week for the Spring semester!

BGSU Recruitment

BGSU Recruitment 2

With the help of the recruitment activism kits of YAL National, we were able to reach out to students with constitutions and other educational literature. Although there has been limited student interest in joining the group, there were quite a few professors that stopped by to thank us for our efforts.

BGSU's chapter is in its first full semester as a registered organization, and we've certainly hit the ground running. With a strong leadership group and several partner organizations offering support, we've laid out ambitious, yet achievable, plans for the year.

After just two days of tabling, we've signed up 13 members to our mailing list and have passed out 30+ constitutions.

SCSU Recruitment Week... Success!

For recruitment week this semester our chapter at SCSU in Minnesota decided to give Presidents Bush and Obama a little heat.  We wanted to show students how similair the two Presidents are, and did so by comparing their major policy stances right next to each other.

Making the boards

We tabled in the most frequented building on campus in order to reach more students, and it was a pretty succesful day.  We had 18 students sign up and have managed to add some new members to the group.

In order to attract students to the table we had a trivia game for them to play.  You had to guess three of the same top campaign contributers to each of their campaigns and you won candy.  Needless to say we gave away a lot of candy that day.

We were also fotunate enough to be placed next to another student group called Students for a Sensible Drug policy (SSDP).  They were very talkative and we signed up for each other's email lists and made plans to do a future "Know your rights" event in the near future.  One of their members has become a pretty consistent attendee of our meetings.

Saint Cloud State's YAL chapter is off to an excellent start!

YAL@VU Spring 2012 Recruitment Report

YAL@VU had an extensive spring recruitment drive this year, hosting four events to garner interest in the organization, and signing up over fifty new members.

In January, we held a Teach-In on the National Defense Authorization Act, along with a Presidential Debate Watching Party. We also hosted a dinner discussion with Libertarian Vanderbilt Sociology Professor Richard Pitt. In February, we hosted a lecture by libertarian Radley Balko on The Militarization of Main Street. We also participated in the national activism event, Crony Capitalism = Phony Capitalism.

Here are some pictures of our events along with mentions in the press.

YAL@VU: Spring Kick-off Events

On January 16th, YAL@VU held its first event of the semester, a teach-in focusing on the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) and its provisions for indefinite military detention of terrorist suspects, combined with a presidential debate watching party. We had one of our largest ever turn-outs, with close to 50 people in attendance during the 3 hours. As part of our spring recruitment drive, we also added 16 new emails to our mailing list. Two local TV stations, WSMV and WKRN, came to report on the event. Our teach-in was led by John M. Drake:

imageJohn Drake was born in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1968. He earned his baccalaureate degree in computer science from UAB in 1991. He then completed a Masters in computer science. In 1998, Drake relocated with his wife to Nashville so that she could pursue research at Vanderbilt. A friend whom he was helping prepare for the LSAT suggested that he sit for the exam as well. He attended Vanderbilt University Law School and graduated in 2011. He currently works in the Nashville area, where he lives with his wife, Dr. Wonder Drake, and their twin sons, Cameron and Miles.

Recruiting the Wolfpack - NC State, Fall '11

After having three members of our chapter attend the 2011 YAL National Convention in Arlington this past summer, our group was ready to hit campus in the fall. By mid-week at the convention we had purchased a sweet banner from Mondo Print, and by the time we were hitting the road back to North Carolina, we already had our plans set. One of the biggest differences between this year and last year was delegation of power. Everything runs more smoothly when you delegate, delegate, delegate.

UCCS Recruitment Drive

Club Fair

Young Americans for Liberty at the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs has been hard at work.

Starting out for the first time as a registered club on our campus at the club fair in August 2011, we found 55 people who scored libertarian on the worlds smallest poltical quiz that opted to sign up for our email list.  Then, with the help of our new activists we found 100 more people in the month of September, 80 on a Wednesday and 20 on a Thursday, who scored libertarian and signed up for our email list.  This was a huge success, especially considering the small size and commuter campus (very small number of students living on campus) nature of our campus!

An excellent film festival has been scheduled and fundedraised for this weekend by our vice president and SFL campus coordinator Todd Hollenbeck with a substantial ammount of promotion within local liberty groups.  A free speech wall is working its way through the school event processing and 2 local speakers have already made appearences at the weekly group meetings.  Altogether we are off to a great start and look forward to more involvment by Colorado Springs and UCCS residents who are for liberty!

YAL at the College of Staten Island off to a Strong Start

CSI Students Express themselves on Free Speech Wall

One month in the books and one campus is never going to be the same again.

If there could have been one word to describe the political environment at the College of Staten Island before this semester, a suitable word would have been: apathetic.

Having the thirst for liberty in my blood and having recently attended the Young Americans for Liberty National Convention, it was an easy decision to pursue starting a YAL chapter at my school.
