I'm Not Sure Whether to Laugh or Puke

Captain America Goes to War Against Drugs!I was reading an issue of Reason Magazine that I have left over from an old YAL activism kit, and I came across this disturbing little gem. The article links to a page on the University of Nebraska's website where they have catalogued government propaganda in the form of comic books. Brian Doherty says in the Reason article,

There are some famous faces here: Spider-Man, Dennis the Menace, and Li’l Abner were all drafted as propaganda agents, turning this joyous art form into a tool of a state that apparently believes its responsibilities are limitless.

The comics on the Fedinflation, and monetary policy are particularly interesting in their silliness. Here are some choice excerpts (below the jump).

The Implications of Federal Education

The U.S. Department of Education was established on May 4, 1980 with its primary objective being to “[assure] access to equal educational opportunity for every individual,” as well as to improve educational quality across America. One of the largest arguments for the creation of a federal department, however, was to coordinate the federal loan programs set forth in LBJ’s “Great Society” program. Johnson proudly signed the Higher Education Act of 1965 into law, proclaiming that the loan programs would “swing open a new door for the young people of America” by making higher education more affordable.

Flash forward several decades from these grand government schemes and these proclamations seem dubious at best. The average cost of attendance at a public university has increased from $950 per year in 1965 to $2,165 in 1980 to $11,034 in 2007 – to say that the federal loan program has failed to make college a more attainable goal for lower-class families would be an understatement. This rising cost spiral has been discussed at length elsewhere, however; the other issues inherent in the federal micromanagement of education are less often mentioned and are perhaps of more importance in our society.

Is this really the best they can do?

[censusadx-large.jpg]

I suppose the military hegemony of the US government makes the Roman Empire a natural ideal for it, but this propaganda cartoon's blatant promotion of an "obediance-at-all costs," attitude still makes it ridiculous and ineffective. Particularly bizarre is the  fact that this Census Bureau ad is ostensibly intended to appeal to Christians, even though the Roman state murdered Jesus Christ. (Which makes the "Don't be afraid," tagline all the more ironic.)

Halloween Night with the State?

Well, not exactly, but you'll get a heavy dosage of ObamaCare propaganda if you go to the new "Saw" film. Apparently we're supposed to root for "Jigsaw," the trashy series' psycho killer, as he kidnaps and murders nonviolent people with bad social habits, as well "turning the tables" on as a health insurance agent.

The latter, as the moral busybody Jigsaw repeatedly notes, is only getting his commeuppance for being an evil capitalist. That is, the old socialist mantra that withholding money or time for oneself, rather than others, is morally equivalent to aggressing against someone else.

But while the filmmakers expectation that we "root" for Jigsaw is rather odd, it seems no more ridiculous to me than to "support the troops."

Re: Nobel Prize for What Now?

The original intent of The Nobel Peace prize was to award: "the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses."

I was, thus, absolutely stunned to see Preston report that Barack Obama has won this prestigious award. This is a man who is massively expanding the most powerful military in world history, considering the "option" of an aggressive war on Iran, and maiming and killing Afghani and Pakistani toddlers with his "strategic airstrikes." Yes, other very evil men have won this politicized award in the past, but it's absolutely shocking they have the gall to give it to a sitting president actively engaged in this sort of violence.

As events like this show, the world has fallen deep into an Orwellian abyss... And there will be no escape from it if we're afraid to speak out unequivocally against this sort of evil and propaganda.

"Come, all you little children -- SING to please your God-King!"

That is, sing for the health care proposals of President Obama, the God-head of the sanctified state....

Doesn't the fact that teachers inundate schoolchildren with this sort of propaganda, who in turn shriek it at us through the MSM, call into question the notion that this is a "free" society?  But good for Willy, who makes a plug for the free market at the beginning.

New War, Same Sell

In this clip you can see Elliott Abrams on Fox describe what he feels the Iranian public would do, should America choose to attack them. Abrams has special knowledge of Iran, being involved in Iran-Contra, and under the Bush Administration he was invovled in Iranian Policy. So he "knows" what he's talking about.

This is very reminiscent of the old "they'll greet us as liberators" line used to get us to go into Iraq.

Barack's Brainwashed Brigades

No, Department of Education bureaucrat- it isn't "silly" to oppose indoctrinating kids as young as "pre-K," with Obama's pro-state propaganda. It's "silly" to think that children watching the eloquent Obama speak his professionally-crafted words, especially under the assumption that he is some sort of God-like authority, couldn't possibly be politically and/or emotionally "modified."

On another note, good for “many conservatives,” for attempting to protect their kids from this atrocity. I'd like to see a broader parental movement to shield their kids from all government propaganda, especially the lies that come out of military recruiters and other state-sanctified worshipped "public servants."
