U.S. Invites War with World: Intellectual Privilege, Jurisdiction, and Property Rights

Cross posted on my blog.

customsRecently the United States Customs and Enforcement(ICE) agency has shutdown more than a hundred .com and .net websites, on the grounds these websites are under U.S. jurisdiction.

Erik Barnett, Assistant Deputy Director for ICE, claims the United States has jurisdiction over all .com and .net websites because all Domain Name Service (DNS) indexes are “routed” through Verisign, a United States-based company. In this article, I will outline three protests against the over-expansion of ICE's power: jurisdiction, international law, and constitutional law. And, ultimately, I will question the very nature of intellectual privilege that has lead to these abuses.

California Statewide -- Young Americans for Liberty Meetup & Social

Where: University of California, San Diego - Bear Room, Price Center West

When: Friday, January 7, 2011 - 8:00pm

We want to talk about club leadership transition, events, organization, successes, and learn some core-skills to become successful activists. We want every member that is part of Young Americans for Liberty to attend, and potential members as well.

We have coordinated this event before the Leadership Institute's Youth Leadership School at UC-San Diego. This will hopefully allow many individuals to have housing for the weekend, if they wish to attend.

After the meet-up, we will have a social gathering.

*Individuals from Nevada and Arizona are more than welcome to come. And, other Liberty orientated groups are invited to attend as well.

YAL at UC-San Diego Chalks up School to bring discourse over TSA

On November 17, YAL at the University of California-San Diego flyered and chalked up their school. They informed the student body about the local protests in both the LA and San Diego areas as part of the National Opt-Out protest. Only having a handful of volunteers, a camera, a box of chalk, and pre-designed flyers by YAL at Vanderbilt University, within the hour, students around campus saw our work and began discussions amongst themselves.

21st Century Prohibition: FDA to Ban Alcoholic Energy Drinks

From ABC News:

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration will effectively ban the sale of beverages that combine caffeine and alcohol, including Four Loko and Joose, by ruling that caffeine is an unsafe food additive, according to Senator Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.).

In a press release, the Senator also announced that the Federal Trade Commission will notify manufacturers that they're potentially marketing the products illegally.

A spokesperson for the FDA would not confirm the release, adding that the agency announced a review of the products in November 2009. She could not comment on a projected date for completion of the review.

If we keep banning things at this rate, maybe the 2020's will be like the 1920's....Great Gatsby, Boardwalk Empire, fedoras (we really need to bring those back)...  Life wouldn't be so bad, right?

Our government has banned flavored cigarettes and now alcoholic energy drinks. Seriously -- what is going on America? These nannies have to go.

President of the World Bank, Robert Zoellick proposes debate over the Gold Standard

From Financial Times:

Mr Zoellick, a former US Treasury official, calls for a system that “is likely to need to involve the dollar, the euro, the yen, the pound and a renminbi that moves towards internationalisation and then an open capital account”. He adds: “The system should also consider employing gold as an international reference point of market expectations about inflation, deflation and future currency values.”

His views reflect disquiet with the international system, where persistent Chinese intervention to hold down the renminbi is blamed by the US and others for contributing to global current account imbalances and creating capital markets distortions.

Krugman Responds:

So Robert Zoellick wants us to return to return to a modified gold standard. Brad DeLong pronounces him the stupidest man alive; that’s much too kind.

Are Google and Paypal a Threat to Banks?

From ZDNET:

RaboDirect general manager Greg McAweeney told an audience from the finance sector in Sydney last week that companies such as Google and PayPal are more responsive and trusted than banks

....They are a non-traditional bank yet they have great reach, access, distribution and trust — they probably have more trust than most of the banks.

Is this a sign that innovation and an exposition of Austrian economics is working?

According to Peter Thiel, PayPal is not a bank in the traditional sense; they do not have fractional reserve lending nor are they backed by the Federal Reserve. Thiel suggests Paypal is equivalent to a money market account.

Jesus Huerta de Soto Invades the London School of Economics

On October 28, 2010, Jesus Huerta de Soto, an Austrian economist and author of Money, Bank Credit, and Economic Cycles, spoke at the London School of Economics; his speech was titled Economic Recessions, Banking Reform, and the Future of Capitalism. Soto, one of the foremost leading Austrian economists and a professor at La Universidad Complutense de Madrid, spoke on the fatal error of the Peel's Bank Act, the healthy process of capital accumulation, the induced bubbles of Fractional Reserve Banking, and the spontaneous reaction of the market against the effects of credit expansions. After his hour-long lecture, Huerta received a loud round of applause, championing the Austrian school at the heart of neo-Keynesian policies, the London School of Economics. Soto recently posted his speech online on Mises Daily. If you disagree with Austrian economics or you find yourself agreeing with Monetarists or even Keynesians, make sure to check out Jesus de Huerta de Soto's speech at the London School of Economics, he might just change your mind.

ATTN. All California Student Activists

From Campaign for Liberty's Allison Gibbs:

On September 4th, there will be a political rally in San Francisco, California. This is about the principles of noninterventionism, not partisanship.  It will hopefully bring together people from all sides of the political map to show our government we want no more of this foreign aggression and policing of the world.

In attendance will be Ron Paul, John Dennis, Dennis Kucinich, and Matt Gonzalez.  The rally will be held at the San Francisco Civic Center at 2 PM.
