Ayn Rand's Increasing Relevance

Here's a blog I wrote on Ayn Rand and her influential novel, Atlas Shrugged:

Ayn Rand’s novel ‘Atlas Shrugged’ was recently put into movie form and her works—plays, books, and essays-- have experienced a surge in purchases. You may think that the fad is just no big deal and will die out as soon as the movie is forgotten, however Rand’s works have been on shelves for decades since their publication. Atlas Shrugged was published in 1957 and since, has sold more than six and a half million copies. The rate of sale in recent years hung around 139,000 copies a year but tripled last year. There have been three autobiographies published about Rand in the last two years. While Rand was a great writer, it was her philosophical beliefs and literary messages that have caught on more than ever recently.

Voluntary Association, Individual Optimization

Our battle is not simply one between competing political ideologies and policy decisions. Instead, our fight extends far beyond political implications into the very heart of this nation's true issue:  a failure in philosophical doctrine.

While our opponents rest with the philosophy of forced altruism, the idea that says people should be required to sacrifice themselves to benefit their fellow man, we rest on the side of individualism. We support the idea that the state can't require support of anyone but oneself -- one's own needs, convictions, and personal efficiency without obligation to anyone with whom he doesn't voluntarily associate.

However, our philosophy does not apply solely to individuals, but also corporations, businesses seeking to make a profit for themselves and not their competitors.

This provocative article displays the struggle one of these corporations -- Apple Computer, Inc. -- to do what is personally best for it rather than succumbing to the will and desires of those who only seek to exploit it.

America Says: Read Ayn Rand

Well...sort of:

Read

A man -- Nick Newcomen -- drew this by driving across thirty states with a GPS device. Yes, that's right, by driving across thirty states. Now that's a Randian if I ever saw one. Perhaps Canada ought to read "Who is John Galt?" next.

Kudos to wired.

Ayn Rand 101

Ayn Rand Graphic

This is all humour of course, but whether you like Rand (as I do, to an extent) or if you hate her, it's cleverly correct to an extent.

Tunes of Liberty: Freewill (Rush)

I'd like to start a mini-series of sorts dealing with one of the best ways to communicate a message:  music. The series will include songs that have been referenced by YAL in YAR as being freedom-based, but I will also be pulling other songs that have a specifically freedom-based or anti-statist/authoritarian message. I introduce to you Tunes of Liberty

Our first example will be Rush's classic song, "Freewill":

Rush is a perfect band for your classic message of liberty. Their song, written by their very own libertarian Neil Peart has many classic libertarian and objectivist themes in it, including (but not limited to!): personal responsibility, accountability, the importance of freewill (duh), and the vice of passing blame.

DHS Teachers Embrace Collectivism

As a student at Dixon High School, which is located in the rather conservative community of Dixon, CA, I never expected to see collectivism so boldly embraced by faculty members.

Today, Friday, Dec. 11th, I had the amazing pleasure of arguing with a biology teacher who had the audacity to say, "There should be no individualism." A biology teacher looked straight at me and said that, her words ringing in the empty classroom with a slight pitter-patter of rain from outside. The statement was provoked after a relatively lengthy argument about a disciplinary issue that had faced the bureaucrats in the school administration.

I serve as a representative in DHS's Leadership assembly, and this week was supposed to be a school-spirit week that ended was to end as all school spirit week -- with a rally at the end. However, two students got in a fight on Thursday, the day before the rally, and the rally, in a knee-jerk decision by the administration, was cancelled. The Leadership Assembly had been planning the event for a month and a half and was therefore very indignant, however the YAL@DHS actually did something about it.

The Ominous Parallels: The End of Freedom in America

The Ominous Parallels

This book by Ayn Rand's heir, Leonard Peikoff, is an arresting depiction of the "ominous parallels" between America today and the chaos of pre-Hitler Germany.  I highly recommend it to my fellow liberty-lovers.  This review via LewRockwell.com sums it up rather well.

Here's what Ayn Rand had to say about it:

If you do not wish to be a victim of today's philosophical bankruptcy, I recommend The Ominous Parallels as protection and ammunition. It will protect you from supporting, unwittingly, the ideas that are destroying you and the world.
