How to Manage College, Political Activism, Volunteering, Work, and Other Responsibilities, and Still Have a Social Life

I'm hearing from more than one of my good YAL friends now that you are struggling to keep up with all of your many responsibilities. It's true: most of the people I know in YAL are the brightest, most ambitious, hardworking, goal-driven, passionate, life-loving people I have ever met, and if anything gives me faith in this country and its future, it is knowing that all of you are going to be the ones running this country in the near future.

But in the meantime with studies, exams, work, hobbies, relationships, responsiblities, and obsessive political activism to secure our blessings of liberty to ourselves (hey- and our future children!) it is very easy to get burnt out. That is why I am a personal devotee to the techniques and habits of personal productivity "life hackers" -who emerged mostly out of the Silicon Valley culture as young, hip, super-hardworking geeks who wanted to get the most out of their life and work with minimum inputs and burnout.

10 Tips for College Students

Here are 10 tips to help you create a productive and memorable college experience… and most of all, to deeply enjoy this time in your life:

1. Answer the question, "Why am I going to college?"

2. Imagine your ideal college experience.

3. Take at least one extra class each semester.

4. Set clear goals for each class.

5. Triage ruthlessly.

6. Get an early start each day.

7. Reclaim wasted time during your classes.

8. Learn material the very first time it's presented.

9. Master advanced memory techniques.

10. Have some serious fun!
