Kerry-Lieberman Cap and Trade Bill: What You Should Know

Ok, full disclosure:  I didn't know about this bill before today.  I mean, don't get me wrong, I knew about cap and trade.  I just wasn't aware of the details of this particular bill.  But when former YAL staffer Jeff Hubbard sent me this information for the YAL blog, I pretty quickly determined that it was important to both know and share.  Here are the key findings of a recent study on the Kerry-Leirberman Cap and Trade bill, known as the American Power Act:

  • The American Power Act would reduce U.S. employment by roughly 522,000 jobs in 2015, rising to over 5.1 million jobs by 2050.
  • Households would face a gross annual burden of $125.9 billion per year or $1,042 per household, with costs disproportionately borne by low-income households.
  • On a net basis, the top income quintile will benefit financially, redistributing to these households roughly $12.3 billion per year from the bottom 80 percent of earners.

Joe Lieberman's Bloodied Hands Grope for our Broadbands

Public servant Joe Lieberman is attempting to saddle America with another “national security” measure. For Joe, that usually means slaughtering Muslim toddlers. But this time, he points his 12-gauge straight to the heart American constitutional liberties: The First Amendment.

Writes Justin Raimondo,

Who else but Joe Lieberman would introduce a bill to give the President the power to shut down the Internet with the flick of a switch? … If the “Protecting Cyberspace as a National Asset Act” passes – and isn’t that a name that embraces practically every collectivist bromide extant? – the Department of Homeland  Security would establish a “cyber-terrorism” sub-bureaucracy, the Office of Cyberspace Policy (OCP), and the National Center for Cybersecurity and Communication (NCCC), with the former lording it over the Internet – a Cyber-Czar – and the latter unleashed to spy on and otherwise guard the “cybersecurity” Senators Lieberman and his two co-sponsors aver is imminently threatened.

It doesn’t matter whether Congress is a chamber of devils or angels. And it doesn’t matter whether the national security threats they foresee are imaginary or real. It is un-American and immoral to give an unconstitutional sub-agency of the unconstitutional Department of Homeland Security the unconstitutional authority to shut down the Internet at the President's say-so. Call your representative and challenge him or her to stand with the First Amendment and the rule of law by opposing the rotten "Protecting Cyberspace as a National Security Asset Act."

Bill Proposes Internet "Kill Switch" for the President

Clearly the best response for dealing with a crisis of epic proportions would be to give one man the power to eliminate our largest source of information and communication:  the internet.  Don't worry, though, Congress has got us covered on this one:

US President Barack Obama would be granted powers to seize control of and even shut down the internet under a new bill that describes the global internet as a US "national asset"....

The proposed legislation, introduced into the US Senate by independent senator Joe Lieberman....Titled "Protecting Cyberspace as a National Asset Act", the bill stipulates any internet firms and providers must "immediately comply with any emergency measure or action developed" by a new section of the US Department of Homeland Security, dubbed the "National Centre for Cybersecurity and Communications"....

Lieberman argued the bill was necessary to "preserve those networks and assets and our country and protect our people".

As might be expected, Lieberman and the bill's other supporters frame it as something which is important for our protection -- they're just looking out for us, of course.

GOP Donors Honor Joe Lieberman

jlHere's another classic example of GOP establishment hypocrisy.

Senator Joe Lieberman will be an honored guest for an upcoming fund raising dinner in Washington, hosted by a group of GOP fundraisers, despite the fact that Joe is not on the ballot this year.  This fundraiser is mainly for his re-election in 2012 (?).

It's extremely ironic that even though there are many liberty-oriented, Republican candidates who could use more fundraising and publicity, these donors decide to not only raise money for an ardent ne0-liberal hawk, but also have the event in his honor.

Why?

Michael Moore Calls for Connecticut Boycott

mikeConstroversial  (and socialist) filmaker Micheal Moore announced that he is determined to boycott the state of Connecticut due to Senator Joe Lieberman's position on the healthcare bill.

Even though Majority Leader Harry Reid made some changes within the bill to attract more "centrist" votes, Senator Lieberman still opposes it.

Moore is very upset at the fact that the citizens of Connecticut voted for Lieberman over Democratic Candidate Ned Lamont in the 2006 November  elections.

Moore stated in his Twitter: "People of Connecticut: What have u done 2 this country? We hold u responsible. Start recall of Lieberman 2day or we'll boycott your state."

Conflict on the Hill: Healthcare

Am I the only one who takes explicit joy in watching Joe Lieberman frustrate those mangey Democrats' attempt to socialize our healthcare industry? I think it's great, and I hope he keeps it up. While I certainly don't agree with Lieberman's fix, it's nice to see more and more division within the Congress. It just warms the cockles of my heart. The longer there is division, the better chance we have of beating this bill!

Lieberman left Reid right

Roundup 11/09/2009

  • Barack Obama expects to impose "health care" on all of his subjects by the end of the year.
  • This is particularily tyrannical considering that the majority of Americans don't even support the plan anymore.
  • Creepy Joe Lieberman is trying to amp up fear over the tragic Ft. Hood murders. But before lecturing the Imperial Army on its "safety" policies, I'd hope Lieberman wipes at least a bit of the innocent blood off his own hands.
  • Some "power players" are predicting that the dollar will have a short run boom -- especially over the next week.
  • The boss of state-friendly Goldman Sachs is claiming big  bankstas do "god's work."
  • And finally, on a lighter -- but still a little creepy -- note, some Congressmen got feisty over the World Series yesterday.

Lieberman condemns Obamacare

Joe Lieberman is calling for a moratorium on "health care reform." While Lieberman is likely motivated by a desire to pander to the hardly principled GOP, he is a prominent figure in the establishment nonetheless. I'm happy to have his help on a very important issue. It's crucial that we preserve all capitalist institutions in this country from state takeovers.
