Doug Bandow is Right On

In my recent article, "Human Beings Aren't Pawns," I pondered several questions:

If the neocons were genuine about their compassion concerning basic human rights and an open democracy, where are they now? Why are they not pressuring President Obama to extend support to the red shirts in Bangkok? Why did they limit their support to the Iranian Green Movement?

The basic gist of the article is that, while claiming to be interested in the basic human rights of the Iranian people, neoconservatives saw them as mere pawns in order to fulfill their desires for regime change.

Doug Bandow, in his article at the National Interest, writes critically of US military intervention:

It’s time to reverse the presumption of U.S. policy. Rather than assume American involvement in other nations’ conflicts, Washington should plan to keep out. Rather than position U.S. military personnel to intervene promiscuously half a world away, America should redeploy its military to defend the United States.

Americans will long remain active in East Asia. But U.S. interests do not require military plans to intervene in local strife, whether within or among nations. Thailand demonstrates how the region’s most likely problems lie well beyond America’s control.

US policymakers should heed his advice.

Senseless and Shameful

I write today both angry and sad. Yesterday, the number of dead American soldiers in Afghanistan reached 1,000. That means 1,000 less brothers, sisters, husbands, wives, aunts, uncles, cousins, parents, and children. All in the name of what? Protecting freedom? Building schools? Fighting a war tactic? These young people are dying in vain for a cause which is not what our government makes it out to be -- a worthless cause in an unwinnable conflict.

Help stop the bloodshed.

Contact your local representatives and demand immediate withdrawal from Iraq and Afghanistan. Also, if anyone you know is considering joining the military, try with all your might to convince them not to. After all, it could be the last conversation you ever have with them.

Damn Them Evil Soviets!

As the media tries to portray Russia and Iran  as an Axis of Evil part deux, prime minister of Russia, Vladimir Putin, continues to debunk this image. Putin said talks of sanctions before talks of diplomacy are "premature" -- and rightfully so.

With Iran being constantly deemed a ticking time bomb, I think that noble title needs to be placed on another country: Israel. It has been said that Israel will attack Iran if sanctions are not in place by December. Looks like they're already preparing. Start the countdown. It's a mere 2 months away.

Iran and Russia, which after all have been pressing for diplomatic and civil talks more than the other states involved, are not the Axis of Evil. It just may happen that such a title belongs to Israel and us.

"They interfere with other countries."

That was the response a CNN reporter got when he asked a Pakistani member of a "lashkar" what he likes least about the US. A lashkar is a private militia force in Pakistan dedicated to eradicating the Taliban's influence and power in the region. Members of these militant groups are fierce and relentless fighters. After all, they are protecting their homes and families, so why shouldn't they be?

His answer to the question that was posed to him is typical among many people of the world. They are simply tired of the US getting involved in every country's business. Many of these people also realize that they are fully capable of doing what the US pretends it has an "obligation" to do. If the people who are under seige say they neither need nor want help, why should the US force it upon them?

Another members of the lakshar said that "They [the US] promote peace within their borders, but they're against peace in other countries." Quite easily put, foreigners are fed up with the imperialist policies of the United States. They need to end if anyone ever wants to "give peace a chance."
