YAL in HuffPo

Check it out, check it out!

Also, major congratulations to the UVA chapter for doing such a successful anti-TSA protest.  Can we get some other chapters doing the same thing?

"Civil, Rights, Action!" Responding to Liberal Attacks on Libertarianism

A member of the New York City Campaign For Liberty published a response to an article that appeared on the Huffington Post a few days ago. I felt like it was worth publishing here for all the kiddos to read to help better defend themselves as you all are no doubt being asked constantly about the Civil Rights Act as it pertains to libertarianism.

Before you read his response, I felt like this quote by Fredrick Douglass basically sums up his entire argument:

"In regard to the colored people, there is always more that is benevolent, I perceive, than just, manifested towards us. What I ask for the negro is not benevolence, not pity, not sympathy, but simply justice. The American people have always been anxious to know what they shall do with us... I have had but one answer from the beginning. Do nothing with us! Your doing with us has already played the mischief with us. Do nothing with us! If the apples will not remain on the tree of their own strength, if they are worm-eaten at the core, if they are early ripe and disposed to fall, let them fall! ... And if the negro cannot stand on his own legs, let him fall also. All I ask is, give him a chance to stand on his own legs! Let him alone! ... your interference is doing him positive injury."

Lawyer in Solitary Confinement for Questioning a Bureaucrat's Motivations

According to Victoria Fine, editor of the Huffington Post, her father was unjustly thrown into prison for putting forth an argument that an L.A. Superior Court judge could not give an impartial ruling because the judge received compensation from both the state and the county.  Apparently the payments were illegal under state law and unconstitutional according to the California Court of Appeals (case law which California should closely follow).  Now, this elderly man is in solitary confinement because he was held in contempt of court.

What is a little confounding about this article is the fact that Victoria Fine doesn't necessarily see a conflict of interest in ALL state-funded judges when the state is either a defendant or plaintiff.

Nonetheless, what Ms. Fine is going through is an outrage.  If I had the resources I would march on that judge right now.  But I don't... and the state does.   So instead I'll fall back onto one of my favorite lines:  If you can't trust a state-funded bureaucrat, who can you trust?

Whole Foods CEO John Mackey Speaking Out Again

wholefoods

Whole Foods CEO, John Mackey, is speaking up again. He is one of many prominent libertarian-minded voices that has decided to enter the spotlight and open himself up for criticism. This time it's on the subject of government involvement in climate change and Mackey's disapproval of current proposals.  This comes despite his Whole Foods stores' notoriety of being proactive in the environmental movement. However, according to Mackey, the climate change hype is not supported by sound science.

An article by an independent blogger was published on the Huffington Post yesterday admonishes Mackey's nerve to take issue with climate change science. He notes how he's often fought for Mackey in defense of Whole Foods, but after Mackey's lashing out against universal health care and now climate change, he's lost all patience.

Read the article here.

I chose to engage with a few commenters at the Huffington Post. Read a few of my comments after the jump. Will others follow John Mackey's lead? I hope so.

Mel Watt's Brigade

There is a common saying that "nothing good is done in secret." As President Kennedy stated, "The very word 'secrecy' is repugnant in a free and open society; and we are as a people inherently and historically opposed to secret societies, to secret oaths, and to secret proceedings." As everyone knows, there are few institutions with as much secrecy than the Federal Reserve.

When Mel Watt (D-NC) proposed his amendment to HR 1207, basically gutting the bill, many in the liberty movement were disheartened. Others increased their commitment. Because of the work of activists from all sides of the political spectrum, the bill had 303 cosponors. As Watt's ideas became known, many of these cosponsors began asking why can't we audit the Fed -- what is so important about keeping their actions secret?

To answer these questions, eight economists sent a letter to House Financial Services Committee in support of Watt's adjustments to the bill. There is just one problem with this letter:  seven of the eight have either worked for or are currently funded by the Fed. In a new report from the Huffington Post, it is shown that almost every one of these economists have some compromising relationship with the Federal Reserve.

How well has Obama Kept Foreign Policy Promises?

OFP

Huffington Post posed a series of questions on Monday to people in the "international community" to examine and think of Obama's performance to date -- primarily his foreign policy -- now that we have approached the one year mark since the election. Now, I assume they were surveying those outside of the U.S. but what does the international community really mean? I took it upon myself to give an account. They were supposed to publish the most "thoughtful" responses yesterday, but after scouring their site I could not find anything. No worries, I have an outlet here.

Climate Change remains "Hot" Topic

Browsing through the Huffington Post on a daily basis has revealed to me that the climate change issue, otherwise known as "global warming," is still a hot topic amongst many.

climatechange

Theory: Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but I understand that climate change is something that happens naturally and can't be stopped (i.e. natural forest fires, volcano's etc.).  The fear, it seems, is that what we are doing (pollution-wise) is throwing the ecosystem out of balance or speeding up the inevitable. If the latter is true, is it possible we are giving humanity's environmental impact a little too much credit? Not that we don't affect this planet, but hasn't nature proven to be more of a force than the "permanence" of humans?

Is this even surprising anymore?

Remember when the tobacco companies were funding their own "studies" done by "experts" that claimed that smoking was not carcinogenic. Well according to the Huffpost it appears the Fed might just be taking some strategies out of their playbooks:

The Federal Reserve's Board of Governors employs 220 PhD economists and a host of researchers and support staff, according to a Fed spokeswoman. The 12 regional banks employ scores more. (HuffPost placed calls to them but was unable to get exact numbers.) The Fed also doles out millions of dollars in contracts to economists for consulting assignments, papers, presentations, workshops, and that plum gig known as a "visiting scholarship." A Fed spokeswoman says that exact figures for the number of economists contracted with weren't available. But, she says, the Federal Reserve spent $389.2 million in 2008 on "monetary and economic policy," money spent on analysis, research, data gathering, and studies on market structure; $433 million is budgeted for 2009.

Opposing views on the Holocaust Museum shooting

The recent events at the Holocaust Museum are horribly tragic.  Unfortunately, as always in politics, partisan hacks are trying to turn this event into an opportunity to enhance their own agenda.  For instance, Michael Rowe at the Huffington Post has proven all too well that he is absolutely submerged in partisan hackery.  He takes the opportunity not just to create a straw man version of conservatism which he then bashes, but also to emphasize the dangers of free speech.  In a recent article, he writes:
There was a time when decency, even honor, was an essential part of the American dialogue in its most ideal form, and part of its very identity. There was a time when our culture would have recoiled in horror at the vituperation flowing unchecked from radios, televisions, and the Internet, instead of applauding it as "common sense," "free speech," or "mavericky," or "a spin-free zone."

An Interview with Ron Paul...

...in the Huffington Post. The interview is interesting in that it focuses on a somewhat different set of questions than he is typically asked by more "conservative" media outlets. For example:
Kathleen Wells: You feel President Obama is a neo-con like Bush? You don't see a distinction between the two administrations? Congressman Ron Paul: The tone is different, but the policies don't change. We are spreading the war. The war is expanding.
