'Ground Zero Mosque' Opposition about Freedom of Religion or Not?

In the ongoing debate over the proposed "Ground Zero Mosque," those opposing it have often claimed that they are not arguing that government should have the ability to stop the construction of the site. They say that the other side's constant criticism that the opposition to the mosque represents an attempt at restricting freedom of religion is false, because they are not advocating using government force -- only persuasion -- to prevent the construction.

But then came recent comments last week from one of the most vocal critics of the proposed construction, former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich:

In a radio interview today, he said he wants the national government to step in and stop the developers from building the Islamic community center by whatever means necessary ... And if that fails, he said, the state government should step in and use its considerable power to stymie the development. "The Attorney General of New York, Andrew Cuomo, could intervene because frankly he has the ability to slow it down for decades if he wants to."

Government preventing the construction of a place of worship based primarily on the fact that a large group of citizens oppose that religion has no place under our system of government. It is becoming evident that several in the opposition to this construction are willing to use government force to prevent it. So much for that whole, "This is not about freedom of religion" thing.

Ron Paul Schools Anti-Mosque Advocates on Property Rights

Unsurprisingly, Dr. Ron Paul has once again taken a stance that advocates the greatest amount of freedom for the greatest number of people. Dr. Paul argues that the majority has no right to tell the minority where they can and cannot build any kind of building, religious or otherwise. He also makes the very important distinction that many anti-"Ground Zero Mosque" advocates fail to notice: America was attacked by Al-Qaeda on 9/11, not Islam.

Dr. Paul rips CNN and Anti-Mosque advocates a new one in this interview on A.C. 360.

Note how CNN attempted to goad Dr. Paul into taking a stance on the building itself.

Oh yeah, Dr. Paul is taking a different stance than his son Rand here (and Jack Conway), going as far as to call anti-Mosque advocates "sunshine patriots."

You go, Dr. Paul.

The Ground Zero Mosque and Democracy

Democracy: When 51% can take the rights of the other 49.

This mosque fiasco is a perfect example of the tyranny of the majority.  I don't even believe that this majority believes they are being benevolent -- how could they?  There is no way people can be so animalistic and strightforward with hate and at the same time think they are fighting for justice (did anyone else see the older lady in the red screaming during a townhall-like meeting?).

At first, I was hesitant to support the building, but no more.  This thing needs to be built; it is no longer about Islamic public relations (which is what I thought the intial intention was), but a fight for the very liberties Americans claim to hold dear.  Islamic and sexual-orientation freedom are, in my view, the civil rights movement of our generation.

Why Jon Stewart Is Probably the Best Mainstream Pundit

I really think Jon Stewart is becoming one of the best political commentators out there.  He has always done a good job in mixing humor and ridicule of the mainstream media, but lately he has been moving from a overall leftist perspecitve, to a more "common sense" one.  While I may disagree with him on many of his perspectives, he does have some for which he should be commended.

For example, he did an excellent job on a recent episode using Charlton Heston who is arguably the most notable figure ever in the right-aligned NRA.  Using Heston's comments on the uproar the NRA received when it held a convention near Columbine very soon after the infamous shooting, Stewart, or the Daily Show writing staff, threw the hypocritic comments straight back into the faces of those on the right who have attacked Islam and those who support the mosque near Ground Zero...

Anyway, check it out:

Views on 'Ground Zero Mosque'

As an exercise in curiosity, below is a poll on the planned 'Ground Zero Mosque' in New York. I'm particularly interested in the views of the libertarians who frequent this site.

See this article for some background. Also, here is a previous post on the subject.

Obama 'Not Commenting On Wisdom' of Islamic Center Near Ground Zero

mos

For once, the president and I agree on something.  However, there is something to be said about the wisdom of this plan -- he's just not the one who ought to say it.

The Islamic community center that is being built near Ground Zero has stirred a lot of controversy. Many from the neocon, Islamaphobic right such as Pamela Geller, Robert Spencer, Joeseph Farah, etc. have turned this issue into a national debate. Though many of these individuals' arguments are ludicrous, some do make a point -- especially many of the 9/11 victims.

It is not only insenstitve for Imam Rauf to continue with this project, but also potentially harming the overall American Muslim community.

Is Hornberger missing the point on the Ground Zero mosque?

Statists who oppose the building of that mosque near the World Trade Center site are missing the point, and the reason they’re missing the point is that they simply cannot bring themselves to recognize that the problem is not with Islam or Muslims. The problem is with the U.S. government and specifically, its imperial, interventionist foreign policy that waged war against people in the Middle East for years prior to the 9/11 attacks. -- Jacob Hornberger, from his recent Campaign for Liberty article to which this is linked.

So yeah, I'm sharing some internet arguing I've been up to of late.  That ^ was my original post.  Below, in quote paragraphs, is the full response I received and my answers to each segment.  What are your thoughts?  Are there better answers to give?

In regards to this quotation and the article it links to, I must respectfully disagree with you and Mr. Hornberger, and I hope he doesn’t think he’s being serious when he says things like this. Two objections:

I’m fairly sure he’s serious.  Why would a well-known man in think tank circles put his name on a public article with which he did not agree?

1. I’d contend that, when it comes to the outrage over the “Ground Zero Mosque,” it is Mr. Hornberger who is woefully missing the point.
