Reasons I Use Facebook

Reasons I use Facebook

By "collaborate" I mean post a link to something and complain about it-- and click "Like" when other people do the same. Dear goodness, it makes me feel so much less lonely in my libertarianism!

But no seriously, I really have noticed I mostly only interact with other YAL people and libertarians on Facebook and use it as a tool of political activism, dissemination, collaboration, and comradery. Anyone else feel the same way? Totally not complaining here. Just noticing.

...and by "people's profiles" I mean yours.

When Central Banking Came to Facebook

This week, monopolistic currency practices came to Facebook:  As of July 1st, Facebook now requires all applications and online games to use Facebook's virtual currency for all its online functions, such as user upgrades and items within games like the popular FarmVille franchise.  This new rule will also allow Facebook to take a 30% cut from all transactions using the new currency, which is slated to become 1/3 of Facebook's income over the next year.

This has drawn criticism of Facebook by the activist group Consumer Watchdog, which filed a complaint to the Federal Trade Commission saying that Facebook is "abusing its power as a popular site" to create a monopoly on virtual currency. In addition, Facebook could effectively control the entire market for virtual goods, which has grown to a $2.1 billion industry.  The irony, of course, is that it's exactly this sort of fiat that the Federal Reserve uses on a grand scale with legal tender laws.

News of the Day

Here's some news I've been posting on YAL's Facebook page today.  If you're not already a fan, check it out!

  • Following Ron Paul's lead, tea partiers and Republicans are becoming ever more open to ending the unconstitutional (and extremely expensive) drug war.

  • A Mississippi lawyer was jailed for half a day because he didn't say the Pledge of Allegiance. The irony: That bit in the pledge about "liberty and justice for all." The legality: Pretty sure the jailing was illegal per West Virginia State Board of Education v. Barnette (1943).

  • Federal agents combed over every inch of an Atlanta bus station...for absolutely no reason. No, really, for no reason. As the agents put it themselves, "no particular threat sparking the surge in activity, just their desire to ward off any potential attacks." Is the TSA gearing up to impose their supposed security measures on all public transport?

Welcome, Mark Zuckerberg, to the world you created . . . like it or not.

When recently asked about his company's privacy problems, Mark Zuckerberg, head of Facebook, stated "the age of privacy is over." Sadly for Mr.Zuckerberg, he didn't know how true that statement would turn out to be.

The well known Hollywood gossip website Gawker combined with another website known as Valleywag to start a new campaign to photograph the Facebook CEO everywhere and anywhere he goes and put it up on the web. Photos ranging from him at a park to sitting at home have all been put together and posted at Gawker in an attempt to destroy any privacy that Zuckerberg might have.

"Facebook's CEO doesn't seem too preoccupied about your privacy, or about ours," says Ryan Tate, editor of the gossip website Valleywag, which posted the photographs. "Likewise, we weren't bothered by the notion of tailing him around the Valley for a few days, or about sharing the experience with you...

"If it feels a little naughty to take such a close look into Zuckerberg's life, remember that this is the executive who pushed the private information of Facebook's hundreds of millions of users progressively further into the public sphere," Tate said.

Though I doubt much will actually change from this, I applaude these bloggers for standing up for the right of privacy, though -- ironically -- their careers are spent destroying it for the Hollywood elite.

Facebook Quote of the Year

In statistics class, students learn that results can be biased if a biased organization funds research that has a material impact on the organization's revenue.  In expressing my reluctance to support all claims put forth by Al Gore, I joined a fanpage on Facebook to discuss "Climategate."  After a conversation about the topic with a friend on Facebook, my friend produced the quote of the year (in my opinion):

If you can't trust state funded scientists, who can you trust?

Uhhh... government's response to climate change is not revenue neutral.  In fact, most of what research organizations subsidized by taxpayers say happens to generate more revenue for themselves.  In other words, government-funded research can hardly be considered unbiased.

Anyone else have a similar quote?

Nightly Roundup 11/12/09

  • Ames is excited for Ron Paul's visit to ISU tomorrow.
  • The US Dollar depreciated by 4.4%, concedes the NY FED.
  • Neocon Robert Gates is assuring us that Obama's Af-PAK "choices" will be wise
  • A Facebook status saved a man from being incarcerated by the unaccountable state "beyond reasonable doubt."
  • In addition to carrying out unjust incarcerations, the state assures the ultimate crime goes unpunished -- if committed by its agents.

"For Liberty" Screening at YAL UW-Madison

Consider this an open invitation to anyone within driving distance. The YAL UW-Madison chapter will be hosting a screening of "For Liberty" this coming November 12th.

"For Liberty" is the documentary of the 2008 Ron Paul presidential campaign. Though it ultimately did not end in victory(obviously), the principles and passion it awakened in a sleeping America resulted in a different kind of victory. This is that story.

The filmmakers of "For Liberty" will also be on hand for a Q&A session afterwards. You can view all the details of this event on Facebook.

Are you deserving of a "Peace" Prize?

After Obama won the 1.4 million dollar prize known as the Nobel Peace Prize, I began feeling a bit overlooked. Luckily a sympathetic patriot was kind enough to gift me a Nobel Peace Prize on Facebook. Do you deserve a "Peace" prize? Of course you do! You brushed your teeth this morning (I hope), fighting the evil cavity doers from terrorizing your enamel.

peaceprizee

Go on, give your friends the Peace Prize they've always deserved: Nobel "War" is Peace Prize.
