Video: Who's Right, Ron or Rand?

The debt ceiling debate is over (for now), but it's important for libertarians to examine the different approaches of two key figures in the Tea Party movement: Rep. Ron Paul, and his son, Sen. Rand Paul.

Debate over "Cut, Cap, and Balance" Continues

Sen. Rand Paul often jokes about the effect his political differences with his father will have on which table he is permitted to sit at when the Paul family gathers. Rand is clearly very much Ron Paul’s son, as they tend to agree completely on most issues; but there is one disagreement that you won’t hear either Paul laughing about: how to handle America’s debt ceiling crisis.

Although the elder Paul has had much more time to prove his fidelity to the Constitution and his desire to seriously reduce the size of the federal government, young Rand is quickly proving his dedication to the same goals and principles. So it is no surprise that both Pauls agree that something must be done to cut spending and ease the threat of the looming financial catastrophe, and it must be done soon. Where they disagree is on what constitutes an acceptable means of achieving these goals.

After more than two decades in office, Ron Paul has never voted to raise the debt ceiling and vows that he never will. Despite his sympathies for the objectives of proponents of the Cut, Cap, and Balance Act, Rep. Paul simply couldn’t support the bill in its current language.

Ron Paul Will Not Seek Re-Election in 2012

imageAfter close to forty years in government, Texas congressman and libertarian bulwark Ron Paul announced today that he will not seek re-election for his congressional seat should he not make it out of the GOP presidential primary.

According to local news website The Facts, Rep. Paul is stepping aside so he can focus more on the 2012 presidential campaign. Although polls are showing him in the middle of the pack in key states like Iowa and New Hampshire, straw polls conducted by interest groups and PACs (most notably CPAC and the RLC) show a large, vocal base of support for his candidacy. His decision to leave will result in an open-seat election in 2012, which is expected to stay in GOP hands next election given the district's general right-leaning slant.

When asked what he plans to do when he leaves the House, Rep. Paul said that he would advocate for the small-government principles he believes in, but "not in the U.S. Congress." Mr. Paul will leave behind a long legacy of small-government, non-interventionist principles he spent his career pushing in Congress. Today, his liberty-minded ideology has given rise to movements like the Tea Party, and various action groups Like YAL and Campaign for Liberty that are determined to make the cause of liberty a mainstream political discussion.  The so-called “intellectual godfather of the Tea Party” may be leaving Washington, and the road to freedom and liberty is still very long, but the movement must continue.

Ron Paul to Reintroduce American Traveler Dignity Act

Amid growing opposition to intrusive TSA patdown procedures, Texas Congressman Ron Paul recently announced his plans to reintroduce the American Traveler Dignity Act, a piece of legislation that would force TSA agents to abide by the same laws as everyone else.

In his weekly column, Congressman Paul stated:

[T]his week I am introducing the American Traveler Dignity Act, which establishes that airport security screeners are not immune from any US law regarding physical contact with another person, making images of another person, or causing physical harm through the use of radiation-emitting machinery on another person. It means they are not above laws the rest of us must obey. As we continue to see more and more outrageous stories of TSA abuses and failures, I hope that my colleagues in the House will listen to their constituents and join with me to support this legislation.

A previous version of the bill contained language that would strip TSA agents of their immunity from laws against unlawfully subjecting an individual to invasive patdown procedures.

Ron Paul Shaking up GOP Politics

Ron Paul is continually reshaping the face of the GOP, Jaun Williams reports:

Here's a  news bulletin - it is becoming increasingly clear that we are living in a time when Republican politics are being shaped by a 75-year-old, 12-term Texas congressman with a son in the Senate. And incredibly, it is no longer out of the realm of possibilty that this outcast of the GOP establishment may win the party's presidential nomination.

If you have not been paying attention, it is time to look around and realize that we are living in the political age of Rep. Ron Paul.

A CNN/Opinion Research poll released last week shows Paul faring the best against President Obama ...

Bin Laden Protesters Are Not Irrational

Originally posted on my blog.

As might have been expected, protests have erupted in the Middle East against the U.S. over the death of Osama bin Laden.

Now, obviously bin Laden did some awful things and was, to one degree or another, responsible for the unwarranted death of many.  However, these protesters — though perhaps uneducated, or to some extent misinformed — are not irrational; they’re protesting with…I hesitate to say “good reason,” given the more harmful courses of action sometimes taken… but certainly with a reason.  It’s the same reason bin Laden’s cause was popular, and it’s written right on their signs:  They want to be left alone — and U.S. foreign policy persistently doesn’t do that.

As the former chief of the CIA's Osama bin Laden unit Michael Scheuer wrote about bin Laden and his supporters, "The focused and lethal threat posed to U.S. national security arises not from Muslims being offended by what America is, but rather from their plausible perception that the things they most love and value—God, Islam, their brethren, and Muslim lands—are being attacked by America." Or, to put it more simply, "They hate us for what we do, not who we are."

Ron Paul Is 'Very Excited' about the Work YAL Is Doing

Reports Robert Wenzel at the Economic Policy Journal of his recent visit with Ron Paul:

On Thursday, [Ron Paul] landed in Reno, Nevada for the speech at the University of Nevada-Reno. He told me that he was excited to see a crowd of between 600 and 700 in attendance for his speech.

He told me the event was organized by the Young Americans for Liberty, and he seemed very excited about the work they are doing across the country. He also pointed out how well organized the Reno event was, which was coordinated by YAL Southwest Regional Director Adam Weinberg.

That's exciting, no?  Read the rest of the piece here.

Ron Paul on Campus Recap

March 24, 2011 -- University of New Hampshire

I was not on hand for this event, unfortunately, but the Ridley Report put together an amazing video:

Ron Paul packed the house with a crowd of 600 people; one member of the audience said it was standing room only.

Media coverage: Fosters.com, Unionleader.com and WMUR.
March 28, 2011 -- North Carolina State University

The day that North Carolina State hosted Congressman Paul was the kick-off of Visualize the Debt -- and what a way to kick it off!  I arrived on the campus of NC State that morning to see the giant debt display and YAL members promoting Ron Paul's speech to be given that evening and talking to collegues about the massive debt.  There was also something I saw on campus that I had never seen before, a free speech tunnel: students are allowed to paint or write anything they want in this tunnel.  The NC State chapter took it upon themselves to paint the entire tunnel with promotions for the event.

Tornadoes and Dime-Sized Hail are No Match for Liberty in Mississippi

On Wednesday April 20, 2011, I was given the distinct pleasure of hosting Congressman Ron Paul at my alma mater, Mississippi State University.

As I woke up that morning I was greeted with the sound of thunder.  Ben Weinberg, MSU chapter president, and I were worried about the number of people that would show up to the event that night.  To clear my head of these distractions, I drove around the dreary but normally beautiful town of Starkville and waited for Congressman Paul to arrive.  When I showed up to the airport to pick up him and his entourage, I was informed that lightning had struck the runway and cracked a portion of it.  I had heard of lightning splitting trees in half but never a runway.

From the airport we drove to campus for his book signing.  Once we got to the Barnes & Noble, our plans went out the window but thankfully, everything went smoothly.  Over the course of an hour over 150 people came to have Congressman Paul's new book Liberty Defined.

Book Signing

After the book signing ended the weather started to worsen; tornado sirens were going off regularly, even right up to the start of the event.  A funnel cloud was forming in the distance and dime-sized hail fell from the sky.

Weather

The press availability was intended to start at 5:30, however the press showed up early due to the weather.  Also as a result, the press event went from a press-only event to a room full of students; the Dawg House was allegedly the safest place in the Colvard Student Union.  After the press was done asking questions the students in the room applauded Dr. Paul for his honest and principled answers.
