Straight shooters and the GOP debate

The behavior of the GOP debate audience -- which as a whole has not impressed lately -- caused a stir again on Sept. 22, when members of the crowd booed after a video question submitted by a gay serviceman was shown. The soldier, Stephen Hill, mentioned that he “had to lie about who [he] was” when he was deployed to Iraq, and asked the candidates to elaborate on their positions regarding the repealed Don’t Ask Don’t Tell policy.

Although the jeering was clearly restricted to a small minority of those in attendance, the fact that it even happened should be cause for concern, especially when coupled with most Republicans’ stance on the issue. In recent years, the “conservative” position seems to have evolved into full support for DADT, at a minimum. Others have advocated for a reinstatement of the total ban on homosexuals in the military. To express anything less than grave concern and indignation is to risk charges of social engineering and support for liberal policy.

But how did we even get to this point? The late U.S. senator and former presidential candidate Barry Goldwater pointed out that “everyone knows that gays have served honorably in the military since at least the time of Julius Caesar” and drew comparisons to the unfounded fears many held about racial integration of the armed forces. He argued that the U.S. wasted vast sums of time, money, and talent in an effort to “persecute and pretend,” and all for little result.

In perhaps his most pithy comment on the topic, Goldwater famously said that “you don’t need to be straight to be in the military… you just have to be able to shoot straight.”

If that was good enough for the man who was known as “Mr. Conservative,” it should be good enough for conservatives – and all Americans who oppose discrimination – today.

Obama Wants Congress, not Courts to Remove "Don't Ask, Don't Tell"

In September, a district judge ruled that the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy violated due process and 1st Amendment Rights. The Pentagon announced on Thursday that they will comply with this order and stop enforcing the policy. But the Obama Administration disagrees with the order of events:

The administration's decision Thursday to ask for a stay of Phillips's court order was criticized by gay rights groups, which have been frustrated by government inaction on the policy. While running for president, Obama said he would repeal the law. But in September, Senate Democrats were unable to muster the 60 votes needed to begin debate.

"Today's appeal by President Obama's Department of Justice is not only indefensible - it is yet another shocking lack of leadership from the White House on issues of equality for the LGBT community," said Robin McGehee, director of GetEqual, an advocacy group.

Pro-state "Peaceniks": The betrayal of the formerly anti-war left

In addition to the paramount cause of peace, the anti-state, counterculture movement of the 1960s placed a high emphasize on liberty. The movement was successful in removing legal sanctions depriving gays, blacks, women, and other historically oppressed groups of their natural rights. Yet the New Left also promoted moral relativism, bizarre "religious" practices, and dehumanizing cultural hedonism.

Today, the establishment left promotes the sexual revolution, plant-worship, and socialism  full-throttle while treating peace and liberty as nothing more than slogans. Many liberals seem to think wearing tie-dye, watching "Ellen," and spewing wishy washy clichés  is the only prerequisite to ride aboard "the peace train." These folks believe we must support Obama because he is a political correctite who wants health "reform," "equal pay for equal work," and other "progressive" initiatives. The brown infants he kills and maims are really not that relevant since Obama is a well-intentioned guy. Indeed, putting an end to this murder and mayhem is a distant priority for most of them.

Call me a conspiracist, but I don't think this dumbing down is coincidental. At the very least, it "conveniently" serves the interest of the ruling elite. For they can now manipulate the left to support all sort of pro-state, pro-war, endeavors under the veil of the progressive social causes. Code Pink, for example, has been convinced to rethink withdrawing from Afghanistan on the basis of "women's rights."

Human rights now, not later.

President Obama made a committment  to the Human Rights Campaign to end the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy. The policy disallows anyone who...

"demonstrates a propensity or intent to engage in homosexual acts" from serving in the armed forces of the United States, because "it would create an unacceptable risk to the high standards of morale, good order and discipline, and unit cohesion that are the essence of military capability."

This is a matter of human rights. It seems pretty simple, Mr. President. Just sign an executive order to overturn this policy. It is not a hard decision.
