UCCS Recruitment Drive

Club Fair

Young Americans for Liberty at the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs has been hard at work.

Starting out for the first time as a registered club on our campus at the club fair in August 2011, we found 55 people who scored libertarian on the worlds smallest poltical quiz that opted to sign up for our email list.  Then, with the help of our new activists we found 100 more people in the month of September, 80 on a Wednesday and 20 on a Thursday, who scored libertarian and signed up for our email list.  This was a huge success, especially considering the small size and commuter campus (very small number of students living on campus) nature of our campus!

An excellent film festival has been scheduled and fundedraised for this weekend by our vice president and SFL campus coordinator Todd Hollenbeck with a substantial ammount of promotion within local liberty groups.  A free speech wall is working its way through the school event processing and 2 local speakers have already made appearences at the weekly group meetings.  Altogether we are off to a great start and look forward to more involvment by Colorado Springs and UCCS residents who are for liberty!

ACLU Tackling Wrongful Police Arrests

The American Civil Liberties Union is taking on the government of Colorado on the issue of mistaken arrests.  CNN reports:

Three police cars pulled into Christina FourHorn's front yard one afternoon just before she was supposed to pick up her daughter at school. The officers had a warrant for her arrest.

"What do you mean robbery?" FourHorn remembers asking the officers. Her only brushes with the law had been a few speeding tickets.

...Later, it became clear that FourHorn was right, that Denver police had arrested the wrong woman. Police were searching for Christin Fourhorn, who lived in Oklahoma.

...Since the FourHorn case, the ACLU found at least 237 cases in Colorado in which police may have arrested the wrong person.

"Welcome To Obamaville: Colorado's Fastest Growing Community" Reads Homeless Camp Sign

SignsThis story broke in Colorado Springs, Colorado, where residents found this controversial sign at a homeless camp. Colorado's station KRDO was first to break the story, and now the station has made a "public appeal for information" on who the originator was.

Though Spencer Swann of Colorado Canyon Signs admits to the contruction of the sign,  he refuses to inform the media whom he built it for. Since then, Swann has replaced the sign with a "Please help. We need firewood, propane and canned food" sign.  Though public perception of the sign was mixed, Swann said: "I've had 100 calls today, and not a single one of them was negative." He also claimed that the originator is a person who is devoted to the homeless cause, stating: "He gives them money, he gives them food, he gives them support."

Great sign. I just wish there was a smiliar one during the Bush administration.

Spending Limits Compared to a "Flat Earth"

I don't often comment on stories coming out of my own state, but when my State Senator suggests that to believe in spending limits is to believe in a "flat earth" I must draw attention to this ridiculous accusation. Colorado has recently experienced some budget constraints due to the struggling economy, and the Democratic leadership has hacked away at the fiscal restraints currently in place. Colorado Gov. Bill Ritter signed a bill Wednesday abolishing an 18-year-old limit on general-fund spending.

Gun Sales Spike for Colorado in 2008

With the passing of 2008 the state of Colorado saw a big spike in the sales of firearms. It appears this is the direct result of the election of Barack Obama. The Rocky Mountain News reports:
Gun sales reached record levels in Colorado in 2008, a spike many attributed to fears that Barack Obama's election will mean tougher firearms laws. Background checks to clear buyers exceeded 200,000 for the first time in history. More than a quarter occurred after the Nov.
