Who David Boaz Isn't Voting For

Not anyone who isn't a real freedom-lover, that's for sure.

This year I’m looking for candidates who stand for freedom across the board, who want government constrained by the Constitution, who believe in the principles of individual liberty, limited government, free markets, and peace.

And that means I don’t want to back candidates who support

  • the war in Iraq
  • the war in Afghanistan
  • war with Iran
  • the war on drugs
  • the constitutional amendment to override state marriage laws and make gay people second-class citizens
  • the president’s power to snatch American citizens off the street and hold them without access to a lawyer or a judge
  • new restrictions on immigration

Note:  YAL does not support or oppose any candidate for office.

CATO: State of the Union Fact Check

The Cato@Liberty blog recently posted the State of the Union Fact Check.  Here's an important excerpt:

THE STIMULUS

Obama’s claim:

The plan that has made all of this possible, from the tax cuts to the jobs, is the Recovery Act. That’s right — the Recovery Act, also known as the Stimulus Bill. Economists on the left and the right say that this bill has helped saved jobs and avert disaster.

Back in reality:At the outset of the economic downturn, Cato ran an ad in the nation’s largest newspapers in which more than 300 economists (Nobel laureates among them) signed a statement saying a massive government spending package was among the worst available options. Since then, Cato economists have published dozens of op-eds in major news outlets poking holes in big-government solutions to both the financial system crisis and the flagging economy.

You might want to turn off your phone...

...next time you go to a protest.  A couple months ago while waiting in line somewhere, I was playing with my cell phone and noticed a GPS function of sorts which would allow my phone to be located by satellite.  Since I don't use GPS through my phone, I decided that was a little weird and turned the function off.

According to a recent post on the Cato@Liberty blog, that may have only been so effective:  all mobile devices can be tracked within 60 to less than 10 meters, depending on what kind of capabilities your phone has enabled.  If government gets its hands on this data, it could be used not only to predict your location at any given time based on your past movements, but also to seriously limit free speech:

A government not so keen on free speech could use such data to see a crowd converging towards a protest site and respond before the swarm takes form — detected and preempted, this protest never happens. Or worse, it could be used to understand and then undermine any political opponent.

Concerning, no?  Read the rest here.
