Kerry-Lieberman Cap and Trade Bill: What You Should Know

Ok, full disclosure:  I didn't know about this bill before today.  I mean, don't get me wrong, I knew about cap and trade.  I just wasn't aware of the details of this particular bill.  But when former YAL staffer Jeff Hubbard sent me this information for the YAL blog, I pretty quickly determined that it was important to both know and share.  Here are the key findings of a recent study on the Kerry-Leirberman Cap and Trade bill, known as the American Power Act:

  • The American Power Act would reduce U.S. employment by roughly 522,000 jobs in 2015, rising to over 5.1 million jobs by 2050.
  • Households would face a gross annual burden of $125.9 billion per year or $1,042 per household, with costs disproportionately borne by low-income households.
  • On a net basis, the top income quintile will benefit financially, redistributing to these households roughly $12.3 billion per year from the bottom 80 percent of earners.

Cui Bono

Unless you have had you head buried in the sand for the last decade, I'm sure you've noticed evironmentalist calls for government regulations to slow "climate change." Since the failure of the Kyoto Treaty, environmentalists have tried to drastically reshape American law to combat those "evil corporations" and "needless consumers" who seek to eat the planet from the inside out. The most recent scheme to attempt to regress us back to a pastoral/agrarian lifestyle is the Waxman-Markey Cap and Trade bill. This dangerous piece of legislation has already passed the House and will soon be voted on in the Senate.

As always the bill is being expanded and changed in the Senate, yet sadly not for the better. In the new version of the bill that has been passed by the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee’s Democrats (with Republicans protesting the vote), there is an extremely scary new provision. According to the Washington Examiner, the bill will contain a "climate emergency" provision. This provision will be triggered when global concentrations of greenhouse gases reach 450 ppm, which is set to happen within a few months. Once triggered it requires that the president to “direct all Federal agencies to use existing statutory authority to take appropriate actions...to address shortfalls."

Climate Change remains "Hot" Topic

Browsing through the Huffington Post on a daily basis has revealed to me that the climate change issue, otherwise known as "global warming," is still a hot topic amongst many.

climatechange

Theory: Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but I understand that climate change is something that happens naturally and can't be stopped (i.e. natural forest fires, volcano's etc.).  The fear, it seems, is that what we are doing (pollution-wise) is throwing the ecosystem out of balance or speeding up the inevitable. If the latter is true, is it possible we are giving humanity's environmental impact a little too much credit? Not that we don't affect this planet, but hasn't nature proven to be more of a force than the "permanence" of humans?

Cap and Trade Passes Because of 8 Republicans

The Republican Party wonders why it can't get seem to get its act together: It's because Republicans say one thing on the campaign trail and do another once they are elected. The Cap and Trade Bill passed in the House by 2 votes. And if that wasn't bad enough, eight Republicans voted for the bill. The bill now goes to the Senate, and we must focus our efforts there.
