Obama: "I'm just like Bush"

Ok, ok, so he didn't say exactly that...but he came pretty close:

This weekend, Americans were treated to something new: Barack Obama defending his war policies by suggesting they merely continue his predecessor's practices. The defense is illuminating, not least for its implicit recognition that George W. Bush has more credibility on fighting terrorists than does the sitting president....

"I think that the most important thing for the public to understand," he [said], "is we're not handling any of these cases any different than the Bush administration handled them all through 9/11."

Wait...being like Bush on terror is a good thing? I thought that was one area of policy where Obama was going to chart a totally new course, repudiating the lack of respect for the rule of law displayed by his predecessor.  We all remember that, right?

When Mr. Obama arrived in the Oval Office his first official act was to order the closing of Guantanamo in the manner of Christ cleansing the temple. Attorney General Eric Holder soon followed by opening a criminal investigation of the CIA's interrogators. And everywhere he went, Mr. Obama told anyone who would listen that when it came to terror, he would be the anti-Bush.

So much for that plan.  Hat tip to the Humble Libertarian.

Another Blatant Lie

In 2006, Senator Obama  voted against the 2006 Military Commissions Act.  Last May, he gave a speech, regarded as one of his best national security speeches, where he condemned “the flawed commissions of the last seven years” and that under him the commissions would be “in line with the rule of law.”

Ready for the change offered? The man who will be making key decisions for the Obama Administration in regards to trying remaining Gitmo detainees in military commissions is a former top aide to Donald Rumsfield, William Lietzau. William played a big role in the Bush Administration's first military commission for terrorists, which were later found unconstitutional by the Supreme Court.

I guess this guy's track record is good enough for Obama to believe that the rule of law will be upheld. By the way this William Lietzau has argued that the War on Terror is a special case that is exempt from international law, such as the Geneva Convention.  This is sadly just another example of a blatant lie from the Obama Administration.

Kudos to Spencer Ackerman of the Washington Independent for breaking this story.

With government, "change" almost always means a change to more government.

And "bringing new ideas to Washington" means new ideas for how to spend your money.  Bush's budgets were horrific, of course, but Obama has definitely made things worse (particularly note that large increase in aggressive war -- er, defense -- spending):

Support for Afghan War Drops

The LA Times' Top of the Ticket blog, which regularly covered Ron Paul throughout his presidential campaign, reports that support for the Afghan war has hit a new low:

Fifty-two percent of the 1,001 adult Americans polled Nov. 12-15 now say the war there has not been worth the cost, down 13 points in the last 11 months....

Once, Obama's war policies were his strongest poll suit (63%). Now, only 45% approve of Obama's handling of Afghanistan; more (48%) don't. His war support among independents, a crucial ingredient in the Democrat's election victory 54 weeks ago, has slipped to 39%.

Apparently Mr. Obama has not yet realized that more of the same isn't popular among people who (thought they) voted for change.  In other good news, the hawkish "fight them over there so we don't have to fight them over here" argument is losing ground too, even as the current administration recycles that old line from the Bush years:

Ominously, for Obama, however, less than a quarter of Americans now buy that argument. Nearly two-thirds (64%) currently say the risk of terrorism at home is the same whether we continue to fight there or withdraw.

The left still won't recognize that it has voted in Bush 2.0

imageHe's younger and better looking and all around way more fun.  He's the Mac to Bush's PC, and he makes the rest of the world feel a little more warm and fuzzy toward the American empire than they have in recent years.  Political disagreements (with both) aside, we all know that President Obama is way cooler than his predecessor.

And despite his wavering on Afghanistan, Obama has also charmed his way (and his war's way) into the hearts of the (formerly) antiwar left, writes Jack Hunter:

Worshipping a president who promised "change," liberals continue to ignore the fact that little has. On foreign policy -- the Left's primary gripe against Bush -- Obama's war mentality is remarkably similar to his predecessor. In drawing down in Iraq, Obama has simply transferred the massive U.S. presence from Iraq to Afghanistan.  Meanwhile, controversial war on terror-era measures like the Patriot Act, extraordinary rendition, and warrantless wiretapping remain intact. Notes observant liberal Noam Chomsky, "As Obama came into office, [former Secretary of State] Condoleezza Rice predicted he would follow the policies of Bush's second term, and that is pretty much what happened, apart from a different rhetorical style."

Chomsky (whom YAL's own Matt Cockerill interviewed recently -- check it out here if you haven't yet!) is right and, to echo an old theme, this is more of the same.  Contrary to appearances, this isn't Mac vs. PC; this is just a new face on the same policies.  Read more from Campaign for Liberty here.

Obama's Excuses Are Starting to Wear Thin

From the YAL Twitter comes a link to this article, which notes that roughly ten months after taking office, the Obama administration still regularly resorts to blaming its predecessor for the country's economic woes.

This sort of blame shifting is hardly surprising in politics in general, let alone the modern politics of blatant irresponsibility (AHEM -- for very different reasons -- Mssrs. Sanford and Bernanke), but what is a little odd is how well the White House is getting away with it:

They inherited the worst economy since the Great Depression, or the economy turned out to be worse than they thought. Which is it? It can't be both -- unless your brain is completely addled by the Obama charisma.

Which indeed?  I'd say that it can be both, but would add  that that conclusion does neither Obama or Bush 2 any favors.  It's true that Obama inherited an awful economy because of years of horrific monetary and fiscal policy, but it's also true that it turned out worse than predicted because...well...because he continued the exact same horrific monetary and fiscal policies.
