Cost of War Exhibit, University of Kansas YAL

flag display

YAL members at the University of Kansas wanted to do something big to speak out against the continued occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan and present a non-interventionist foreign policy to the student body.  An idea from the past is slowly turning into a traveling display across the state of Kansas where YAL chapters are teaming up with local activist groups to present a flag memorial for service-members lost and a forum to discuss the cost of maintaining the US Empire.  Groups involved include:

  • Ambassadors for Peace (K-State)
  • Amnesty International (K-State)
  • Iraq Veterans Against the War/Afghanistan Veterans Against the War
  • Manhattan Alliance for Peace and Justice (Manhattan, KS)
  • Young Americans for Liberty (KU, K-State, Wichita State)
We also got some press coverage:  University Daily Kansan (article) and Lawrence Journal World (video). Other media in attendance were KUJH and the University of Kansas Alumni Magazine.

Freedom starts at home

There is quiet self-contradiction developing in the Tea Party movement that needs addressing, for it is a contradiction that, if left uncorrected, could turn a force with truly revolutionary potential into one more element of an oligarchic political stasis. This movement, which as a culture attempts in many ways to be an imitation of the founders, is steering away from its origins and failing to take hold of perhaps the single most important insight of the entire American Revolution – that national change is the result of local change, not its cause.

It was not homesickness that led Thomas Jefferson to return to his home state of Virginia and decline a reelection to Congress after penning the Declaration of Independence. At the forefront in Jefferson’s mind on July 5, 1776, was not the welfare of the new nation as a whole, but rather the welfare of his home state of Virginia. For Jefferson, Virginia was not simply one part of the ultimate goal of the United States, but in fact an ultimate goal in itself. It was at the local level that Jefferson knew previsions for the future freedom of his fellow Virginians had to be made.

The Fed and Kittens

Fed KittenI've written quite a few articles in the past on the Federal Reserve and how much disdain I have for it, and this Thursday I will be giving a presentation to the same effect.  It will also involve kittens.  For any in the Winston-Salem/Triad area, here are the details

"The Fed and Kittens"

Thursday, April 6 at 7 p.m.

Benson University Center 301, Wake Forest University

Any and all are welcome to attend.  My goal will be to explain what the federal reserve is and how/why to abolish it in a manner that is accessible to someone who has never studied economics.  At the same meeting we'll be making Wake Forest YAL's plans for 4/20 (Bake Forest anyone...?)  Though it might be hard to top the 4/20 that we had last year ;).

I'll be recording the presentation, if it's any good I will post it up here afterwards.
