Republican Revisionism

Since George W. exited the White House, many Republicans have slowly but surely attempted to rehabilitate the image of their pathetically unconservative party, writes Howard Rich at NetRightNation.  Having the GOP in power, they argue, wasn't "'all that bad' -- and certainly not as bad as the socialist hordes who have ostensibly pushed America to the brink of financial ruin over the last year."

Indeed, the GOP has attempted to co-opt the fervor of the tea partiers, despite having engaged in exactly the same big government practices which both groups now loudly decry (I'm presently at CPAC, where Mike Pence just said that "Republicans in Congress are back in the fight and they're back in the fight on the right!"  Yeah, I'll believe that when I see it with a GOP majority.  It's easy to be principled when you're the underdog).

Sadly, their attempts sometimes seem to succeed as tea party protesters quickly forget that the very GOP now courting them was just a few years ago using control of all three branches of the government to...well, to make the government more invasive and overgrown than ever.  As Rich concludes:

Was Bush a better steward of your tax dollars than Obama?

Yes – but that’s the problem. Getting mugged worse the second time around doesn’t absolve the first thief of his culpability.

And the first thief is very guilty indeed.  Republican revisionism and cozying up to those newly angry with the government is to be expected and will frequently be successful.  But in the liberty movement, at least, let's maintain memories more than two years long.  (Hat tip to Adam Bitely.)

G Bush Billboard

No this not a forgery. A local Minnesota Public Radio voice has brought attention to this billboard which can be seen traveling on I-35 near Wyoming, MN. Though funny, this billboard shows just how important liberty minded groups like YAL and C4L are right now.

Resistance Is NOT Futile

The Tenth Amendment Center is steadily turning out more and more content worth reading, and this article from Friday on nullification is no exception:

Even as calls for nullification of proposed federal health care mandates have intensified on the state level, an almost hysterical effort has arisen to discredit such measures, and paint them as part of an obsolete theory with no bearing on modern politics.

Regardless of its logical descent from our most basic founding principle, that governments derive their just powers from the consent of the governed, nullification simply doesn’t work, critics say.

Or does it?

Read more of the argument that it does here.

Great Anti-War Music

While we're on the subject, here is Aimee Allen singing Buffy Saint Marie's "Universal Soldier" at last year's Rally for the Republic. For those of us lucky enough to be there, it was a very moving experience, proving once again the potential for crossover between the Old Right and the New Left of the 1960s.

Republicans are increasingly irrelevant...but we don't have to be

This weekend, I went to the Defending the American Dream Summit hosted by Americans for Prosperity.  Though there were exceptions, so many of the speakers loved to throw red hot meat just to get the crowd angered.  It wasn't hard to pick out lines which were obviously thrown in to stir up angst.

However, some people seemed to have a better perspective: They said they were die-hard Republicans and the past 8 years (of Bush 2) had gotten them fed up.  They said young and active people with ideas like Ron Paul were needed to guide us in a new direction.

One group which I think can make that happen is Year of Youth, which I am involved in and which was created by Jared Fuller, who heads Young Americans for Liberty at Wake Forest Chapter and is the NC YAL State Chair.  Hopefully we can recruit and assist various people who are willing to challenge the establishment and really make a difference.

URI "pimped" their activism...

...by pulling a member's car onto the quad to reenact police encounters.  Students were eager to engage in the activity and told the group it was "knowledge to take with them."

Senior Conor Bedell led students through a tutorial of their Constitutional rights while Deep Gill played cop.  It was both entertaining and informative.

Notice the "Fresh" in "Fresh"men.

In the south most classes are already in session and the summer has left most student's minds.  However here in New England classes will be in full swing this coming week.

One of the best parts on activism is meeting new people and sharing new ideas with the new people.  There is no better time than now to explore fresh ideas from incoming freshmen this year.  Freshmen classes are growing expotentially every year at most state schools, so take advantage of the large groups and find the activists among them.
