Recently the United States Customs and Enforcement(ICE) agency has shutdown more than a hundred .com and .net websites, on the grounds these websites are under U.S. jurisdiction.

Erik Barnett, Assistant Deputy Director for ICE, claims the United States has jurisdiction over all .com and .net websites because all Domain Name Service (DNS) indexes are “routed” through Verisign, a United States-based company. In this article, I will outline three protests against the over-expansion of ICE's power: jurisdiction, international law, and constitutional law. And, ultimately, I will question the very nature of intellectual privilege that has lead to these abuses.

Last Friday, March 18th, the Cal State Fullerton Young Americans for Liberty participated in some community service. After being approached by campus coordinators of the GEAR UP program during a round of tabling, we happily agreed to do our part in encouraging local high school kids to give serious consideration to pursuing higher education after graduation (this is what the GEAR UP program is designed to do).

After several meetings and group brainstorming, we came up with an idea of what we could provide the high school students with when they approached our table during the event. We decided that we would give them a Coke, but not the regular Coke that you see in your local 7-11, but the ones that are in the glass bottles that come from Mexico. This gave us the opportunity to open up a dialogue about tariffs and subsidies that cause American soda companies to use corn syrup rather than sugar. All the kids wholeheartedly agreed that the sodas with sugar tasted much better than the ones they normally drink.

This object lesson is a very understandable approach to people when showing them how choices are being made for them in virtually all aspects of their lives. These thirty or so kids that we gave a YAL key chain bottle-opener and a bottle of Coke will undoubtedly always remember this small lesson in economics that we provided them, every time they drink a syrupy soda.

Could Northeastern’s stringent club approval process be stifling student involvement?

Middler computer science major Greg Kerr said the process is “nightmarish,” after spending most of the current semester trying to start a club.

At Monday’s Student Government Association (SGA) meeting, Kerr appeared during open discussion time to call the university’s policies “burdensome,” decrying the “red tape” he’s faced.

“Based on my experience at other universities, I don’t see the same level of student involvement at Northeastern,” Kerr said in an interview with The News. “How often do you see students in front of Shillman Hall doing something meaningful?”
