UC-Irvine Welcome Week Recruiting

On Monday, September 19th, Young Americans for Liberty at UC-Irvine attended the Anteater Involvement Fair. From approximately 11 AM to 3 PM, over 80 sign-ups were attained for the UCI YAL chapter (including their name, email, phone, etc).

Here is how we did it: Stand in front of your table with a smile on your face, ready to approach people. If someone even glances your way, walk next to them and ask them a simple question. Try to get them to smile, laugh, or just stop walking. I would usually ask something like, "You look like someone who likes freedom! Am I right!?" When he/she says yes, respond with "Then our club is perfect for you!"

UC Irvine “Visualize The Debt” Event Report

A few months ago, YAL at UCI displayed a debt clock; although, we used PVC pipe to construct our clock. Unfortunately, we received less than a dozen new sign-ups at that time. This time around, I knew what to do different, and thus had much better results. I was motivated by the media outlets who came to cover us, and I started to have fun with it. Once you find out ways to have fun, you can run a very successful event. That is what I was doing wrong before – I didn’t come up with ways to make it fun for everyone.

National Debt "Clock" Event at UC Irvine

On January 18th-19th, the Young Americans for Liberty club at UC Irvine protested against government spending by displaying a homemade national debt clock for all students to see. This was done during the busiest time of the day (11AM - 3PM), in the busiest place on campus (Student Center). The event was recorded and uploaded by Campus Reform; the video can be viewed below:

UC Irvine Semester Report

The Young Americans for Liberty chapter at University of California, Irvine has been working hard to keep the club organization alive and growing. Our leadership positions have recently been transfered, and brand new members are now in charge, including myself. So far at UCI, we have held a total of two large events, as well as recruiting new members by tabling and holding meetings every week.

Our first event was the 48th Congressional District Debate, which was held on October 13th, on campus. This was held in conjunction with the College Democrats and the College Republicans. At this event, the Libertarian candidate (Mike Binkley) debated with the Democrat candidate (Beth Krom). The Republican candidate did not end up showing up. Two YAL members -- Josh and I -- asked Beth Krom a few questions towards the end of the debate. I have taken the liberty of editing out the footage of our questions from the televised debate, and uploaded it to youtube. This video can be viewed below:
