The Young Americans for Liberty at Northeastern University drew at least 150 students to their event "Alcohol, Parties & the Law," presented by C.L. Lindsay. C.L. Lindsay is an attorney who founded the Coalition for Student & Academic Rights (CO-STAR). Through the night he spoke to students about how to have a party without getting busted by the police (or ticking off your neighbors).

Through his fun and entertaining presentation C.L. covered virtually every legal pitfall, including how to collect money legally, keg laws, underage drinking laws, noise ordinances, etc.

The best part of the event besides the enthusiastic student audience? The school helped sponsor the event and was very supportive of it, as it is in their best interest if students stay out of trouble (since they won't stop having parties).

I decided to attend the Occupy Boston student march yesterday to learn more about what was going on and support the notion that banks and the Federal Reserve are some of the most corrupt institutions in this country.  

I have footage of the police threatening to arrest protesters at the Charlestown Bridge. This represented a turning point in the days event, whereas there had been no conflicts with the police before that. Around 1:30 AM, about one hundred protesters were arrested and the campsite destroyed by the police. Regardless of what you think, this is extremely interesting to witness firsthand.

Its amazing how similar student governments can be to real governments.

In order to reach their goal of 20% student voter turnout the Northeastern University Student Government Assocation provided a system of prizes to every 99th voter. There was a counter on SGA's main web-site showing how many students voted.

A peculiar thing happened. While many students were unaware of this system, many SGA members were refreshing the clock over and over and racking up the prizes, such as free haircuts for life, for themselves.

You can see the source here, but its amazing how government at all levels can be so unaccountable.

I posted earlier about my frustrations with Northeastern's process to "approve" our event. I am pleased to say that I've worked it all out and the school is allowing us to conduct the event, as well as publicize it (without a few minor restrictions). They're even going to help us secure the sign so it doesn't blow over.

The key to making progress turned out to be a quick phone call. After numerous e-mails back and forth, I finally expressed my frustration/confusion to the school. We arranged a phone call with student activities, and after I explained that I was nervous that Northeastern was trying to block my event, they very quickly made clear their willingness to let me go forward and assist me.

The moral of the story is that if your school is causing you grief, vocalizing your concerns about your right to free speech on campus can lead to fast action from the school. This, of course, will not always be the case, so remember to be ever persistent in this matters.
