As students at the University of California, San Diego prepared to fly, drive, hitchhike, walk, or crawl to their destinations this past Thanksgiving break, the Young Americans for Liberty at UCSD left them with a little reminder before getting into their desired mode of transportation: the Federal Government is here to keep you safe!
The YALers took it upon themselves to make sure that their peers were up-to-date on the new TSA screening requirements currently in effect in airports (and now some train stations, bus terminals, and highways) across the country.
In the case of UCSD, these requirements include such practices as placing all freedoms in a quart-sized plastic bag before traveling, and to always consent to mandatory searches and seizures to ensure swift movement and passage through security checkpoints.
Last Spring, Young Americans for Liberty chapters across the nation made headlines for putting our national debt crisis in perspective with "Visualize the Debt," a national activism event where students constructed large displays depicting the overwhelming and ever-increasing number which is our government debt.
Unfortunately, Visualize the Debt is one of those events that has never become less relevant in our generation. The debt continues to grow at $4 billion a day. Congress put a band-aid over the issue when they raised the debt cieling in August to $15.2 trillion, but the band-aid has nearly been peeled off.
In the past week, the national debt crossed the $15 trillion mark - exceeding the entirety of our Gross National Product. That is, if we were all taxed at 100% and still willingly got up in the morning to go to work, we still couldn't pay this thing off over the course of a year.
Congressman Ron Paul has made his first visit to the Silver State since announcing Tuesday that he is starting a Presidential exploratory committee.
With the added excitement of a possible future candidacy in the air, Dr. Paul arrived at the University of Nevada, Reno Tuesday flanked by reporters, video cameras and a healthy crowd of Ron Paul Revolutionaries and curious students who were having their first encounter with the now-famous Congressman from Texas.
The campus book store sold out of copies of Ron Paul's new book "Liberty Defined", as supporters lined up for a chance to receive an autograph.
The University of Nevada Reno Young Americans for Liberty are a young chapter, but their enthusiasm for hosting Dr. Paul translated into a serious commitment to getting out the word on campus and using the event as a way to recruit new leaders to the cause of liberty. Check out this photo from the club's sign-making party:

Gerald Clift, the YAL President at Western State University College of Law, argues for a YES vote on Prop 19, the proposition to legalize marijuana in California, at his school's first event for the new YAL chapter.
Holding the event one day before election day, he debates his chapter's faculty advisor (an opponent to the measure), in a lunchtime forum co-sponsored by the Federalist Society.
As you'll see at the end of the three part video, attending law students voted on the debate's winner: Gerald tells me he pulled out a victory in the balloting by four votes.
