The Irregular Times provides a tally of "Yes" votes, "No" votes, and abstentions on the renewal of the draconian PATRIOT Act, which I've pasted below the jump. Each name is linked to the site's measure of how "progressive" each congressman is (hey, at least they're using the right term from a political science perspective). That measure in itself isn't so useful, but these pages do provide some interesting data, like what five congressmen vote most like the one whose page you're viewing, as well as contact information, etc.
Why was it necessary to provide this tally? Simply because the vote for the renewal of this ridiculous legislation was cleverly disguised as a vote to approve Senate ammendments to the Medicare Physician Payment Reform Act, and one of those ammendments was -- you guessed it -- the PATRIOT Act.
And why did the Congress choose to vote this way? Because the congressmen who voted "Yes" preferred secrecy "rather than having it on the record for everyone to see that they voted to renew the worst abuses of the Patriot Act without any effort to protect Americans from their spying powers at all."
I'd encourage you to take a look at the list, locate your own representative, and perhaps let them know just what you think of the so-called PATRIOT Act.
Let’s start with those members of the House of Representatives who got it right:

This is a great resource!!! Sad that only 2 out of 9 TN Reps voted no. This is great ammo for the 2010/12 elections. Thanks Bonnie!
Hard to blame those who didn't vote.
I mean how many constituents are actually going to read the bill before condemning you for being against "Medicare Physician Payment Reform"?
The website is interesting, but very ideologically-minded--the writer claims to be an "independent" analyst, but wholly ascribes to some version of "progressivism" that cares mostly about non-whites, non-car-users, redistribution, social justice, etc. He gives his own interpretation of each bill--his site, his rules--but the implications of each bill are far broader than some of his justifications or rationalizations are willing or able to explore.
Other than simply getting carried away with the tide of hysteria, without any substance, can you tell us what exactly are "the worst abuses of the Patriot Act?"
A sure sign that a group or movement is dishonestly engaged in demagoguery is their refusal to be specific.
I have heard endless amounts of chest-thumping, wailing, and hysteria, using the phrase "Patriot Act" as being the same as "THE BOOGEY MAN."
Leftists and Libertarians scare each other over camp fires by shouting "Patriot Act!" instead of "Boo!"
But nothing I have heard that is actually IN the USA Patriot Act is in any way objectionable.
Lots of foolishness that is thrown around BUT NOT actually IN the USA Patriot Act would concern me.... but ain't IN the USA Patriot Act.
I also know of things that were already under previous law, that the USA Patriot Act REIGNED IN (limited, smaller than what had been before).
But with all the hysteria and rolling in anguish on the floor, n one can tell us exactly what is supposedly wrong with the USA Patriot Act.
OH, SORRY, I FORGOT!
The point is simply to hate George Bush.
THAT'S RIGHT! I totally forgot about that
First, this will now be a law signed by President Obama. Dislike for it has nothing to do with which president signed it; it's unconstitutional and grossly abusive of privacy regardless.
Second, take a look at these articles for reasons why the PATRIOT Act is problematic:
"How Congress Has Assaulted Our Freedoms in the Patriot Act"
"Reconsidering the Patriot Act"
"Domestic Surveillance and the Patriot Act"
"FISA and the Patriot Act Are the Abuse"
"The PATRIOT Act's Assault on the Bill of Rights"
"True Patriots Should Worry More about Freedom at Home"
Some of these articles are older and focus their criticism on the Bush Administration for passing the law, but I can guarentee you that they -- or at least we at YAL -- would be just as upset if it were originally passed by Obama or any othe president.
I just wanted to say "thank you." You voiced my opinion almost to the letter.
Michele Bachmann and Jeff Flake voted for it.

A mere one thousand violations. And that was only from '07.
I am not arguing with you about this, but about this:
“Medicare, Medicaid, insurance industry bureaucracies, and an army of voracious lawyers put an end to affordable USA health care forever. End of story.”
Are you not able to distinguish between a program that pays its own way (Social Security and Medicare) and a program (the pentagon, etc.) that steals from other programs to pay for its unlimited appetite?
