Here at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) we are finally off to our Spring Break. And, we're getting prepared for big things this coming quarter. Last month we held a protest against the recently passed health care bill.

If you don’t know where UCSD is located, we are in La Jolla, California, one of the wealthiest communities in the United States. The health care bill has often been portrayed as a struggle between rich whites vs. poor minorities, so one might expect the residents of La Jolla would have supported our protest...right? On the contrary, many of the wealthy in California are for big government, probably because most of them have gained their wealth through corporatist interests.
In California, a very statist and socially liberal state, libertarians and conservatives are ignored or labeled as ignorant. Our protest signs were met with people flipping us the bird or cursing us out while driving their BMWs full of children. And yet, there were some sane individuals -- many of whom, ironically enough, didn't drive the more expensive cars -- who cheered us on.
Even though some passersby verbally attacked us, we had a handful of people come up to us to thank us for being there. One of these individuals, an employee at the local Whole Foods store, thanked us for visibly supporting economic and individual liberty.
We specifically made our stand across the street from where protesters for a single-payer system ususally stand -- although they didn't show up that day. We had twelve individuals at our protest; a majority of us were from YAL at UCSD, while a couple of individuals came from YAL at San Diego State University and California State-San Marcos.
The protest was a success. We showed La Jolla that not all young people support this bill, big government, and corporatism. And, I hope, we showed our parents' generation that they are enslaving us into a world of debt -- and we want none of it.
