The Global Warming Boogeyman

Matt Cockerill
Feb 17, 2010 at 8:18 AM

As if the cold days and snowstorms in February weren't enough! Here is a list of other things attributable to global warming:

Political Cartoon by Glenn McCoy

It's a shame that organizations like this and c4l feel the need to ignore the science. They're so very correct on almost every other single issue ever.

Were they right about global cooling in the 80's? How about the ozone hole in the 90's? The earth goes through cycles, its been around a lot longer then us and will be around a long time after us.

Temperatures may have gone up for a short period of time but satellite data has shown that in the last 10 years they've gone down.

Fear is a tool governments use to control people, thats all this is. They're running out of things to tax so this seemed like the next great idea.

Mark,

This post is intended to mock off-the-cusp statements from political hacks attributing day-to-day temperatures to global warming. Nothing more.

In any case, having grown up with two scientists for parents, I can assure you that the  hysterical reaction people of the "Al Gore view of things" have to any questions about man-made global warming is anything but scientific. Science is a value free study based on empirical evidence. Good scientists conduct research dispassionately.

I think the overzealous climate change advocates have tried (and largely succeeded) to create a framework wherein every out of the ordinary weather event is quickly associated with their theory simply because these unusual events stick out in our memory so well and thus create potent psychological reinforcement for their position in the public mind. While I have no doubt that *some* of those events are at least partly byproducts human activity, the quickness of judgment we often see, and considering the vast complexity and relative uncertainty of climate models, leads me (and, I think, many reasonable people) to believe it's a lot more about a propaganda campaign than scientific rigor. I think this cartoon captures that idea pretty well. I'm definitely in agreement with Matt about this: the mark of a true scientist is that he or she is only passionate about uncovering the truth, not about advancing any particular agenda.

I would like to know why soo many find it soo hard to beleive the Sun could be a bigger driving factor in our climate then humans.  Certainly the billions of years the Earth has been around has seen all kinds of much bigger impact through natural phenom than man has done.  And certainly the geologic record shows that, complete with periods of vast die off through natural phenom.
