The Geography of a Recession

This video shows the rate of unemployment by county from January 2007 to September 2009.  Spoiler: it gets worse, and all that stimulating doesn't seem to be working.

Interesting to note, however, is the little pocket of prosperity conveniently located around DC -- one of just a handful of locations east of the Mississippi that's not dominated by the purple and green of 7-10+ % unemployment.  This map doesn't show it, but it would be interesting to see a comparison of unemployment rates by county and the amount of stimulus spending they've been subjected to -- er, recieved.

well first off, I would like to say hoorah for western kansas. long live wheat and a stable economy. on a more intellegent note, I would like to point out the flaws of the statisticts. My home country in western kansas stayed yellow basically the whole time, showing a couple percent unemployement.  In actuality, we are facing underemployment. Yes a strange phenominon I know. There are hundreds of jobs just in the city, not mention ag work. Our state representative said that in his two representative counties, there are nearly 1000 agrictultural jobs that need filled, plenty to satisfy the needs of all unemployed. Also, you could get anybody with a high school degree half a dozens jobs in town tomorrow. The people here that are unemployed are either handicapped or lazy, and I think thats the same everywhere.

So take the stats with a grain of salt. Realize that theres a couple percent everywhere that for whatever reason dont want to work (or are disabiled and couldnt work any job) Just a thought. Thanks for reading.

Wow, it is really getting worse every month. I live in Northern Virginia and according to the map, we are doing fine so far. Interesting to see the mid- west holding their own out there, but the south and west coast are far gone.
