Newly declassified information has revealed some concerning activity on the part of the FBI:
A fast-growing FBI data-mining system billed as a tool for hunting terrorists is being used in hacker and domestic criminal investigations, and now contains tens of thousands of records from private corporate databases, including car-rental companies, large hotel chains and at least one national department store...
In other words, the FBI is keeping track of a lot of information about private citizens and obtaining it without warrants. Moreover, the Bureau wants to quadruple the staff of the tracking program to allow them to better keep an eye on all the terrorists this is supposedly going to catch.
The best part of this story is that even the Department of Homeland Security has said (albeit about a different specific program, but it's basically the same thing) data mining for terrorists is an ineffective plan which could lead to violations of privacy -- yes, that DHS, the one which runs the TSA, or airport security. And if those guys are concerned about privacy violation, this data mining stuff must be bad...I thought that's what the Fourth Amendment was supposed to be for?

My God. The freaking' DHS is concerned that the FBI is overstepping privacy boundaries?
Terrifying.
our privacy is shot - but they demand security to protect their criminal actions from transparency? Time for turnaround!
Check out the JUSTICE Act, which will hopefully roll back some of the nastier provisions of the Patriot Act, i.e. warrantless wiretapping of Americans, letters from NSA bureaus authorizing spying on people, etc.
I can guarantee you'll not find much on it in the media.
It's not perfect (perfect would be repealing Patriot altogether), but not bad for being something Russ Feingold and Dick Durbin came up with.
Hopefully public notice of JUSTICE will derail whatever the FBI has come up with now in their devious little scheming minds.
yes, the FBI, CIA, DHS, and everyone else in the government is invading your privacy, violating everyone's constitutional rights on a wholesale basis, local police forces have become armies, cops are getting a real kick out of tasering people, and what little freedom we have is fading fast. You're just noticing this now? What else did you expect?
The tyranny was made possible in the usual manner. The TV scared you with horror stories about criminals, terrorists, perverts, drunk drivers and drug addicts, and you sat on your butt and believed whatever you were told. After they filled you with lies you screamed "please, great government, protect me from all these evils," which gave them leave to remove your liberty as part of the "protection" you begged for.
Idiots.
I am glad to see that we are working hard against terrorists. The ideas that they have for this is so good. This is definitely going to help in the future.
