Writes YAL blog reade Troy Heagy:

I am a resident in Pittsburgh and work at the University of Pittsburgh.  I was not a protester during G-20, but living and working in the Oakland area of Pittsburgh, I happened to be caught in what amounted to riot police assaulting the entire Oakland area indiscriminately with pepper gas, LRAD, rubber bullets and billy clubs.   I wasn't sure if you were aware of the situation, but I wanted to let as many people know what happened here in Pittsburgh as I can...

I very strongly feel that Oakland was a victim of malicious and un-checked State Terrorism over the course of the last few days and the world needs to know about what happened here...

Heagy provides links to:

  • An entire site devoted to chronicling police brutality at the G20 summit.
  • A video where armed police take over a college dorm.  As the policeman puts it: "It's almost like if the government came in and declared martial law...but it's not."  Right, because we can't even be bothered with such pitiful formalities.
  • And two local stories covering the protests.

Hey, thanks so much guys!  This story seems to be getting more attention, and as the Pittsburgh mayoral election is coming up in five weeks, this issue is sure to gain some political traction.  Even though the current mayor reponsible for all this, Luke Ravenstahl, is endorsed by both the Democrats and Republicans here, there are a couple of Independents that will hopefully stir things up.

A recent news story of the mayoral electionon featured a great quote by Independent mayoral candidate Franco Dok Harris: ""What we had were a lot of students who wanted to see what was happening. We had students who wanted to get back to their dorms and were met with rubber bullets and tear gas. We had dorms that were tear-gassed. We had people trapped in stairwells... That's not Pittsburgh. That's a military state."

Again, thanks so much for your help and support!

I'm yet another student from Oakland who witnessed the brutality here over the week of the G20 and heard first hand accounts of friends whom had been terrorized, tear-gassed and trapped in parts of their own campus. The entire ordeal is outrageous, and we greatly appreciate this article. Thank you so much!
