I stumbled across this Politico article today. It's definitely worth a read:
President Barack Obama won in 2008 with the vigorous support of young voters. Four years after the Democratic presidential candidate Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) won voters 29 and younger by just nine percentage points, Obama won them by 34 points — 66 percent to 32 percent.
Given how enthusiastically young voters embraced Obama, many assume that his policies have had largely positive effects on America’s youth.
But a closer look reveals that Obama’s agenda harms many young Americans in important ways. In fact, many may be beginning to feel that they literally cannot afford to be as exuberant about the man they so easily fell for....
Obama constantly told young voters that his agenda was designed with their best interests in mind. We’re doing this “for the next generation” was his mantra. But two years later, many young people are searching for jobs and finding only a president who increasingly fails to reflect their values and priorities.
Read the whole article here. (Note: Bush's policies weren't so hot either, and this doesn't even mention foreign policy...)

Whats interesting is you are citing Gary Bauers, a very conservative fellow. I thought you YAL types disdained us conservatives.
On the contrary, many YAL members would consider themselves to be conservatives...and many might call themselves liberals. We favor support of peace, freedom, and property, whether it comes from left or right, and typically find agreement (and, of course, disagreement) with both sides of the conventional political spectrum on a number of issues.
Hmmmm.
So the youths were expecting Obama to fix a major recession in such a way that they wouldn't bear the brunt of it? They were expecting universal healthcare at no cost? They were expecting Obama to take a conservative position on abortion? They were expecting Obama to cure the world's human rights issues? They were expecting Obama to make Republicans get along with Democrats?
Are we sure youths are fit to vote? ;)
I don't think they were expecting the abortion part (he was pretty clear about that), but yes, it certainly seems that was the case with many young Obama supporters.
...and if you're going to broach that question, you might as well go all the way and ask if anyone's fit to vote. And that will make for an interesting -- if frustrating -- string of comments XD
Actually, leading up to the election in '08, there was all kinds of stink about how Obama's voting record on abortion was too liberal. He made himself pretty clear on it prior to the election. He was also pretty clear about his foreign policy and economic direction. I've seen very little out of him that I would call a surprise. But, then again, I never bought into the conservative conspiracy theories or the liberal hope propaganda.
And you may be right about the general unfitness of the American citizen as voter. One can only hope that ignorance does not prevail. Maybe a good step in the right direction is for a certain Politico blogger to move away from writing quasi-propaganda like 'Obama's anti-youth agenda.' That's like writing 'BP's scheme to end the dolphins.' :O
