Obama: "I am not in favor of legalization."

Today an “Ask Obama” forum was held by YouTube, with questions submitted and voted on online. One question was about drug legalization, from a member of LEAP (Law Enforcement Against Prohibition). Obama says he "is not in favor of legalization" but he does think it is a "legitimate topic for debate." What a guy! How nice of him -- letting us debate and all.

His administration should take a break from its Drug War Crimes, learn the consequences and Economics of Prohibition, and stop the war on drugs (and the Constitution). Below is the video of Obama's answer, followed by some humor about the drug war. (Don't forget about libertarian comedian Doug Stanhope's stand-up tour, kicking off right after CPAC!)

Doug Stanhope on drugs -- not literally -- as far as I know (Warning: strong language):

One more of Doug Stanhope on the subject (Warning: strong language):

How can we shrink demand?!  I don't see how this is possible in a market system, other than providing more rehabilitation clinics for addicts who want help.

How should we try to shrink demand of anything awful, such as wanting to watch 'Dancing with the Stars'? With persuasion, rather than force. This may not be an easy task, as Americans have a long history of enjoying drugs.

As libertarians, we should obviously not use the force of government; but we have legitimate non-violent means to persuade people to stop doing whatever things we personally see as wrong: education, social boycotts, excommunication, etc.

Also, I think Doug Stanhope is somewhat right in his view of going after the "source" of the drug problem - meaning what makes people unhappy, bored, dull, etc. - and I think many of you will agree with me that if we had a truly free market and if we didn't have big government, with no limits on its power, making war on almost everything, that we would all be much more happy, prosperous, peaceful, and less desirous of taking drugs
