Glenn Beck: "Most Americans are Libertarians"

No, I'm not kidding. In fact, I'm far from kidding.

Guess who busted out the Nolan chart on their show just the other night, alongside Judge Andrew Napolitano? Yep, the one, the only, the controversial and frequent "ranter," Glenn Beck.

But the very interesting thing, however, was how much credence he gave the concept of libertarianism. Furthermore, what surprised me was that the son-of-a-gun actually explained it well.

Check out the video (posted below as well) from Beck's recent program where he explains the Nolan chart; but more importantly, make sure you send it to a "conservative," or any Glenn Beck fan. Convert these fans; don't fight them just yet.

I was pleasantly surprised about this piece. Apparently Glenn has a lot of respect for the Judge unlike O'Reilly.

Gloriously expert position. I merely bumbled upon your post and desired to articulate that I have really relished understanding your blog articles.

I'm not quite sure why Glenn Beck gets a bad reputation with libertarians. While he is certainly not a complete libertarian he does have strong libertarian leanings and is a passionate supporter of limited government. Even during the Bush years, Beck was fighting for limited government and was one of the few conservative commentators who was heavily critical.

Phil,

One of the many reasons libertarians and conservatives  are hostile to Beck is because he supported the Bailouts, the stimulus package, the PATRIOT ACT, both wars, and a host of other items antithetical to libertarianism and constitutional conservatism.

As well, he was very critical of Ron Paul when Ron was predicting the financial collapse, calling him "loony."

I guess the point of contention is not with his recent comments, but with the fact that he has "flip-flopped" so to speak.

Jared Fuller's picture

Agreed. He is not Mr. Perfect Libertarian, but let me tell you, even in the "movement", few are. I respect the guy.

He is at least open minded, unlike so many other entertainers on cable news.

's picture

I'm not sure about Glenn Beck.  I think he's just a conservative and wants to use libertarianism to "stand out".  He never talks about our current foreign policy on his program.  He only bashes Bush when talking about Bailouts and such (which he supported at the time).  Plus, he took an answer, albeit poorly worded, by Debra Medina and turned her into a crazy conspiracy nutjob when she is the best candidate in Texas.  He completely overlooked how libertarian she was in order to point out that she didn't explicity say she didn't believe in 9/11 truthers (when she was really saying that they have been asking questions and haven't been getting answers and she wonders why).

Since he is such a prominent figure right now, him giving credit to libertarians is good and will hopefully get a lot of the skeptics to actually look at the platform, but I don't think he really is and I think libertarians should keep an eye on him so that he doesn't distort the libertarian ideology.

Well, I wouldn't disagree much, but, there is one other interesting aspect of Glenn that seems to be coming into light.

During his CPAC speech, I heard right from his mouth "we should export democracy through example, not force," referring to our foreign entanglements.

Not perfect yet, but hey, it's a step down the logical road of non-interventionism.

Jared Fuller's picture

Yeah, I remember that.  I guess I'm just hesistant to trust him because of how neocon he was (or is).  The big thing that makes me suspicious is that doesn't give credit to Ron Paul and the movement he started.  Even in his speech he basically reiterated most of what Ron Paul said.  He said Republicans suck too like he's the first to do so, but never said Ron Paul has been saying this for years.  Jon Stewart will even say Ron Paul has been saying it for years.  I don't want to sound like the entire movement should be a Ron Paul centered movement, even though we all know he is the best voice right now, but for espousing similar things to what Ron Paul has been saying Glenn never mentions him.  It just makes me a little suspicious.

Stay hesitant; we owe no person allegiance. Our allegiance is only to the philosophy of freedom!

For the time being, we will take the additional exposure but should we follow Beck (or anyone) blindly? Of course not. That's the cool thing about being liberty oriented.

Jared Fuller's picture

Im sorry but Beck is an emotional tool bag. Did he mention who won the the CPAC straw poll where he was the keynote speaker?

Exactly.

's picture

Of course he didn't.

I'm no Beck apologist; I was merely pointing out that he is becoming increasingly friendlier to our ideas.

Like I said, we owe no person allegiance and if he starts to stray once more from the philosophy of liberty, then we can expose him for a fraud to the ideas. Maybe he's experiencing a genuine transformation, maybe he's not--I'm not privalaged enough to say for certain.

Jared Fuller's picture

Bill O'Reilly is better on War than Beck.  Killing innocent people overseas is the most tyrannical statist position possible.

George Edwards's picture

lol I'm not defending Beck, just pointing out where he's coming from now.

This may be the largest exposition of the Nolan Chart and the World's Smallest Political Quiz in history.

David Nolan must be proud; Marshall Fritz must be looking down from heaven with a sense of accomplishment.

Will the phones at Advocates for Self Government be ringing off the hook after this broadcast?

Oh that's true!  I hope it brings them a lot of new supporters and donations.  I feel like my little twenty bucks doesn't do much.

Holly,

I can assure you that your $20 does a great deal. That amount helps us get an Operation Politically Homeless into the hands of passionate YAL students.  We've been hearing a lot of stories recently how a single student with an OPH kit can identify dozens of new libertarians who join his group and help spread the message of Liberty.

So thank you!

God if that were only true.  The world would be a far, far different place.

's picture

It only surprised you because you haven't watched him at all in the last year or two.

's picture

I generally am not much of a mainstream media junkie--I prefer to get my content from other, less skeweed, places.

However, I do frequent the main lines of communication and have been following Beck, in part, for several years. So yes, I have watched him "in the past year or two."

Beck from 2 years ago, I do not like at all (he supported the bailouts, the stimulus, the PATRIOT act, etc.,) but the more recent one, like this version of the post, I am less keen to write off.

Jared Fuller's picture

I've listened to him for years. He is generally pretty good; but when he doesn't understand something, he feels way too confidant explaining it (especially now on Fox News).

Alex B's picture

Not dyed in the wool Barry Goldwater/Ron Paul Libertarian, Glenn Beck has done more to create legit awareness of the libertarian/Liberty movement than anybody to come along in pop culture.  It blows me away that there is such a desire to purge this movement of anybody with corprate backing or waivering opinion on the dogma of the libertarian movement.  Trying to purge the party of the unclean is ridiculous and quite honestly too commie-esque for me to handle.  Take the free mass advertisement for your beliefs, however watered down, and run.  This most important movement won't make it anywhere with out sunlight shining on it.

's picture

Let's just support any pro-war righty then.....

If an idiot rambles long enough he is bound to say something intelligible.  However, the very thing that distinguishes us from neocons is not an issue we should compromise on.

War is tyrannical and evil.  Ron Paul and the Mises Institute, as well as FFF, FEE, CATO (for the most part), Reason, Judge Napolitano, Lewrockwell.com, C4L, and many other organizations bring principled people into the movement (not to mention Ayn Rand books, Friedman books, and other popular books that get people thinking and searching).

Are the latest shock and awe jockeys like Glen Beck really the type that will familiarize people with the likes of Mises, Hayek, Rothbard, and Kirzner?  People don't get to Mises from Beck.  I got to Mises through Rand.

I'll stand corrected and the slightest anecdotal evidence.

George Edwards's picture

I think it is important to note how far "up" the Nolan chart Beck has travelled over the years. When I first heard his radio show (years before CNN), he was a forgettable, unoriginal neocon. He seems to be reassessing, or perhaps finding, for the first time, the foundation of his natural inclination toward libertarianism.

Think of Beck as freshman orientation, The Advocates and others as "Libertarian 101," and Mises and the like as the graduate level. You must go through each step, and one leads to the next.

's picture

I agree with Fuller when he says "convert these fans; don't fight them just yet."

George Edwards's picture

So the Marxist strategist Alynsky wrote, "never alienate a potential ally." We shouldn't alienate Beck fans, but should quickly point them to new, more substantive, economics and foreign policy experts.

Jared Fuller's picture

Nice find Jared, this was great. The Judge was a vital part of this and sharp as a tack when faced with these common arguments conservatives make against libertarianism that can't let go of the hand of the government.

If Beck continues his CPAC speech/this episode trend it could be a game changer. I agree he's on TV you don't put your faith in him, but don't stop him from educating people like this!

If Medina gets the nomination after tomorrow, all is forgiven between me and him.
