As a blogger here, I enjoy the regular connection I have with this audience, as well as being able to follow stories as they develop. I've posted here before about the First Lady's anti-obesity project, and while I'm not a fan of how she's going about this, I found something related which is much more liberty-friendly:
Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution is a bottom-up revolutionary act -- he's gone to the most obese areas in America to teach people healthy habits rather than mandating good behavior from the top down, as Mrs. Obama proposes. Any liberty-lover would enjoy this show, which has so much commentary on how government mandates simply don't work to fix problems like this. I highly recommend you watch it (and listen for some great quotes about how much red tape he has to deal with).

It seems the pro-active Jamie Oliver is bent on changing the school food system for good. I think we can all agree the schools need a lot of help as well as the garbage they supply to the youth of america. When push comes to shove Oliver misses the point. As the prep and education about health could be increase for the better, the giant food contracts signed by states and districts dont usually have the kids health interest at the forfront. Just look at the pandemic that is the food lobby in washington. I know, shocker. Oliver managed to lobby a huge subsidy increase in the UKs lunch program along with new rules and food prep. There are already rumblings from congress about a similar plan happing in the US. Will this solve our "food crisis" time will tell, but it seems to me to be more of the same. We'd do best to pack our kids a lunch, for a handful of reasons.
Oliver has stated that children have "a right to milk in school" and that "any government of old" would have found the amount of sugar consumed by children to be child abuse.
Im not enthused.
Apparently the program wasn't that much of a success, either. After awhile, costs were double the school's budget, and many kids dropped out of the lunch program altogether.
I can't say it's much of a suprise, since this Oliver guy is from England. Have you ever had English food? They mix everything with mashed potatoes, it's disgusting.
