Ron Paul (R) voted against it in 2006.  I must have missed his name on the list.

Coburn and Ensign did vote against it, but other than them every Republican was for it.

when the vote is in jeopardy, the minority leader has always allowed votes to be siphoned off. politics in the past has always been a process of give and take.  newt did not give and he was taken away. he was marginalized rather quickly after the shutdown of the mid nineties. the boehner should open a history book and take note.

As a libertarian, I appreciate this but it's inference is very misleading (and I assume it's supposed to be). Of course the statement is true but the Republicans feel that strategically this might be their only opportunity to get a balanced budget amendment. Whether this is true or not, that is the reasoning. And it might be a good one. If a balanced budget amendment will take a sledge hammer to our deficits in the near future and help eliminate massive government overreaches like Obamacare, this will have been worth it. I'm all about not compromising but only when on the defensive. Not the offensive.

The key here is that in 2006 they were trying to raise it to finance two wars while in 2011 they are trying to raise it to keep social programs that benefit millions of Americans.

It seems to me that republicans painted themselves into a corner when they vowed never to raise/change revenues. Anyone who voted for cuts should be the first in line to take the blade. Ahhhh! But they won't! The disconnection between the Washington and the real world is huge.
