Ugh... Another day, another ugly smear against the Ron Paul/liberty movement, this time courtesy of Dana Goldstein, writing for "The Daily Beast."
The clear point of Ms. Goldstein's piece is that Paul movement is tainted by the "fringy" racism and general nuttiness of a few of our "associations." How ironic that point becomes when one looks at what she wrote about the Rev. Wright situation. Though Goldstein thinks it's fair to associate Ron Paul (and his whole movement) with the ideas of a few "birthers" he unknowingly meets in a C4L event, only a "racially-tinged," promoter of "lies" would have considered President Obama and his campaign "un-American," in response to the Rev. Wright "scandal."
This comes in spite of the fact that Obama sat in the pews, for over a decade, of a preacher who described White America as the "US of KKK," and proclaimed that we should pray, “God Damn America.” Both Wright and his congregation, whose cheers indicated their overwhelming enthusiasm for such sentiments, were clearly directly "associated" with Obama.
I don't bring up the Wright "association" because I view it as relevant to the character and ideology of Obama and his movement. I bring it up to exemplify the pathetically transparent hypocrisy of Goldstein's smear piece. Every journalist is guilty of mistakes and inconsistencies, but this is a whopper of a double standard and an explanation is surely warranted. Until such an explanation (or better yet, an apology) is offered, we'll have to assume Goldstein views petty tactics she scathingly criticized in the past as acceptable if applied to people with whom she disagrees.
I thought this article was fair enough - Ms. Goldstein draws some connections between Ron Paul supporters and the 'birther' movement, which she supports with actual names. Just because most of us are not 'birthers' and do not like to be associated with that movement does not change the fact that some Ron Paul supporters are, and some more Ron Paul supporters are associated with militias, like the Viper Militia.
Granted, the vast majority of us are not 'extremists', and Ms. Goldstein seems to make that point. She shows that the gun-carrying folk at various town hall meetings were behaving within the law, and no violence ever came of it. She also quotes Ron Paul a number of times, which is always good because Ron Paul always knows how to say the right things. Most importantly, she espouses the general tenets of our beliefs (hawkish on immigration, which I admit I am, anti-war, anti-tax, etc.)
In any case, this article was a pretty balanced view - so long as you're not completely high on the kool-aid.
Bryan, I see where you're coming from but I'd have to strongly disagree. The whole purpose of this piece is that, laudable qualities aside, Paul and his movement are somehow tainted by their associations. I agree with Lew Rockwell that this is a "stasi-agent" like tactic.
I don't think it's accurate to describe the liberty movement as anti-immigration. The debate among many Paulians is focused on preventing ILLEGAL immigration vs having total open borders.

Yeah, Ron Paul says that we should be able to have open borders... but until we get off this whole welfare state fix we need to keep them closed because tax paying dollars are going to people who don't pay taxes. I dislike the article myself and I definitely see her using a "stasi-agent" like tactic. However, I posted the article to facebook and told my friends about it because Ron Paul's views are accurately represented in the article; even though he is decried for having particularly radical followers. In the end I think the article shows how the establishment is scared of Ron and his capabilities and I think ultimately this is a desperate attempt to try and blunt his progress. The media has never been on our side, why should we think they should join us now?

Perhaps a congenial tone was used by Goldstein in her piece, (probably to soften up the Paulian Internet brigades) but I think we need to call out blatant double standards when we see them. My view is that we have to "pre-empt" this guilt-by-association stuff now, because some MSM lefties seem to be testing the waters as to just how much "craziness" and "racism" they can attach to all opposition movements against Obama. That this piece follows another Daily Beast piece connecting Lew Rockwell, Tom Woods, Ron Paul, and Freedom Watch to bigotry is no coincidence.
Why do people on the right get accused of being rascist? If anyone looks at what the direct and indirect consequences of various policies are, it becomes very obvious that people on the left support policies which are very harmful to the black community (even if the intentions are completely the opposite). The Democratic Party has always been that way (especially since Lyndon Johnson), it's just that somehow the Party's image has changed since the 1960s. I guess what I'm trying to say is, virtually nobody is knowingly rascist, but liberals support policies which are very rascist against the black community.
Managed to "get by" Ron Paul for over 15 YEARS.. with HIS NAME on every issue?! I think you're in denial or just want to drag out the pretense a little longer. And his son's anti-civil rights "mistake" on the Maddow show just proves that the rotten apple didn't fall far from the diseased tree.
