Another Reason Not to Support Government Schools

This article is a few days old, but gross enough to still warrant posting:

In the past three years, the government has provided the nation's schools with millions of pounds of beef and chicken that wouldn't meet the quality or safety standards of many fast-food restaurants, from Jack in the Box and other burger places to chicken chains such as KFC, a USA TODAY investigation found...

That isn't always the case. McDonald's, Burger King and Costco, for instance, are far more rigorous in checking for bacteria and dangerous pathogens. They test the ground beef they buy five to 10 times more often than the USDA tests beef made for schools during a typical production day....For chicken, the USDA has supplied schools with thousands of tons of meat from old birds that might otherwise go to compost or pet food.

More here (eww).

People are often afraid of a free market because they have this idea that businesses, being profit-driven, will constantly lower the bar on their products to make an extra buck. Then they think the government would never do this, because they're ideologically-driven and need to please the public.

To the contrary. Businesses are fragile things, if their products don't please consumers or are unsafe, they'll find themselves out of business due to lawsuits and/or lack of consumers. Businesses consistently RAISE the bar when it comes to quality and safety. Government programs on the otherhand will cut corners wherever possible, while the public generally fails fault the program, or cannot create a big enough upcry to make a difference at their distant legislature.

The meaning of life is unique to each person. It has absolutely nothing to do with how primitive lifeforms came into existence. I feel sorry for those who have to force themselves to make such connection because of their religious obligation.
