Name:  Rep. David Schweikert
 
Age:  50

Hometown:  Fountain Hills, AZ
 
Family:  David and his wife, Joyce, have two cats and a dog named Charlie.
 

Personal Biography:  David Schweikert is a successful real estate business owner who graduated from Scottsdale Community College with an A.A., as well as from Arizona State University with a B.S. degree and an M.B.A.  He and his wife, Joyce, attend Saint Maria Goretti Catholic Church.

Political Biography:  Schweikert entered politics in 1989, when he was elected to the Arizona House of Representatives.  He served on the Arizona State Board of Equalization from 1995 to 2003, which deals with property assessment, and acted as the treasurer of Maricopa County from 2004 to 2006.  Currently, Schweikert is a Republican member of the U.S. House, representing Arizona’s 5th Congressional District; however, heavy redistricting has caused Schweikert to seek election in Arizona’s 6th Congressional District.

THE RACE

Primary Election:  August 12, 2012

General Election:  November 6, 2012

The District:  Rep. Schweikert is in a unique position in his primary race thanks to recent redistricting.  There is technically no incumbent in the 6th District, but Schweikert currently holds the congressional seat in Arizona’s 5th Congressional District, and his primary opponent, Ben Quayle, currently holds the congressional seat in Arizona’s 3rd Congressional District.  Quayle was also redistricted to the 6th District.  After winning the primary in August, Schweikert will face Democrat Matt Jette in the general election.
 

THE ISSUES

Economics

  • Supports passing a balanced budget amendment
  • Opposes the president’s power to raise the national debt
  • Committed to never voting to raise taxes
  • Earned an “A” from the National Taxpayers’ Union

Foreign Policy

  • Believes only Congress can declare war
  • Supports bringing the troops home from Iraq
  • Opposed Obama's intervention in Libya
  • Opposes Nation Building
  • Supports utilizing diplomacy with Iran
  • Supports a non-interventionist foreign policy that puts America first

Civil Liberties

  • Opposes the National Defense Authorization Act as a whole (NDAA)
  • Opposes the PATRIOT Act
  • Opposes SOPA and all restrictions on internet freedom

Federalism & the 10th Amendment

  • Supports federalism on all legislation not specifically authorized in the Constitution
