The Jobs Through Growth Act

The Republican Study Committee (RSC) has drafted a bill called The Jobs Through Growth Act, H.R. 3400, which is supposed to significantly reduce the federal burden on businesses and encourage business owners to begin hiring again. The RSC, led by Chairman Jim Jordan, has combined several pieces of legislation that relieve job producers by reducing personal & corporate income taxes, eliminates the death tax (which is essentially double taxation), cuts regulatory bloat by exempting small businesses, addresses energy issues and much more. This bill would be an immediate boon to the economy by eliminating the government-driven uncertainty that our economy is facing. (See the details of the bill below the jump.)

Most -- if not all -- of the elements of the bill would have an immediate positive impact on the economy. The reduction of taxes allows individuals to decide how they would like to spend their money, rather than some incompetent member of the federal government. Allowing foreign profits to repatriated at a lower rate will encourage investment and spending in the US rather than overseas. The reductions of red tape could provide the biggest benefits for the economy. The amount of money spent on complying with government regulations can now be spent on more employees or can be passed along to the consumer reducing prices across the board. Another way prices could immediately be lowered is with the relief provided by the energy reform portions of the bill, if energy is cheaper, everything can be cheaper.

The only issues with the bill are that the RSC doesn’t go far enough in reducing taxes and there is no reduction of spending implemented into the bill. If the bill is passed, the tax cuts are going to have to be matched by a cut in spending; otherwise the national debt goes up. The bill should have addressed this by introducing real spending cuts in areas where the federal government has no place spending our hard-earned dollars.

Bipartisan Amendment Calls for
Accelerated Handover in Afghanistan

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

WASHINGTON, DC – Ten years after the start of the war in Afghanistan, more than one hundred thousand American troops remain in that nation, providing military and security assistance to the Afghanistan government. A bipartisan group of senators today offered an amendment to the Defense Authorization bill to urge the president to accelerate the timetable for transitioning to Afghanistan control over their own security. The effort is being led by Senators Jeff Merkley (D-OR), Rand Paul (R-KY), Tom Udall (D-NM), Mike Lee (R-UT) and Sherrod Brown (D-OH).

“We went to Afghanistan to destroy al Qaeda training camps and bring to justice those responsible for the September 11^th attacks. With the death of Osama Bin Laden, we have now accomplished those goals. It is time to end our presence in Afghanistan and refocus our attention on fighting terrorists wherever they may be,” said Merkley. “At a time of high unemployment, a wave of foreclosures and growing debt, we need concentrate on nation-building here at home.”

“It is time to have a clear missive from the President on how he plans to end our presence in Afghanistan. We cannot continue endless nation-building efforts overseas while here at home we face expounding national debt, crumbling infrastructure, and out-of-control spending in Washington,” Sen. Paul said.

"For more than a decade we have invested precious lives and resources in Afghanistan to eradicate terrorism and bring to justice those responsible for Sept. 11," said Sen. Tom Udall. "Thanks to the brave work and dedication of our military, intelligence and diplomatic personnel, al-Qaeda no longer has a significant presence in their country and Osama bin Laden is dead. Setting an accelerated timeline to drawdown our troops gives the Afghans strong incentive to take over their security, and it allows us to concentrate on terrorist organizations with global reach.”

Earlier this year, President Barack Obama began the drawdown of troops in Afghanistan with the goal of removing all combat troops by the end of 2014. However, that would mean that tens of thousands of troops will remain in country for three more years with many support and training personnel remaining beyond that.

Given that America has largely accomplished the goals set out at the onset of the war and that the chief mission has morphed into a wide-ranging “nation-building” effort that is costing our country nearly $10 billion a month, the senators believe that we need to rethink this use of our military resources and speed the handover to the Afghanistan governmen

The resolution calls for the President to expedite transition of responsibility for military and security operations to the government of Afghanistan and provide a plan to Congress within 90 days of passage of the resolution of a timeframe and completion date for that accelerated transition.

Conservatism’s Future: Young Americans for Liberty

Our new Director of Outreach, Jack Hunter, wrote a fantastic article highlighting the growth and success of our organization, as well as the parallels of our movement with the Goldwater movement of 1960s. It is truly a must-read (or a must-see)!

Young Americans for Liberty (YAL) is the United States’s premiere conservative and libertarian youth activist organization, with 26,000 members in 286 campus chapters nationwide. Patterned after earlier, once-dominant groups like Young Americans for Freedom (YAF) — which organized and rallied much of the grassroots muscle behind Goldwater’s campaigns — YAL initially grew out of “Students for Ron Paul.” Since its founding three years ago, YAL has exploded to become the largest conservative youth activist organization in the country. In fact, its size is unrivaled.

They are attacking us out of nowhere. This proves we are winning.

On Monday, a “reporter” named Kyle Michaelis, who runs a blog called the New Nebraska Network, went into full attack mode against YAL and two of our members. The central assertion of the vitriolic article is that Republican Governor Dave Heineman has hired two inexperienced members of a right-wing extremist group to implement health care reform in the State of Nebraska. The group in question? Young Americans for Liberty. Most of the article is a total misrepresentation of the facts -- if not outright lies -- and what Michaelis doesn’t tell you is that he has faced criticism himself for his own political appointment.

The targets of his attack are YAL members, Michael Sciullo and John Paul Sabby, who were hired by the governor to wade through the murky waters of ObamaCare and come up with solutions that don’t harm the current insurance market in Nebraska. The two are far from inexperienced. Scuillo has worked for the National Right to Work Legal Defense Foundation as a Political Director, and has a thorough knowledge of the healthcare industry. Sabby has worked with the US Census Bureau as well as working for YAL. Governor Heineman presumably hired the pair because he believed that they were capable and intelligent men who could properly analyze the complex requirements that ObamaCare puts on the states and help to implement policy that would comply with the law in a way that would be least detrimental to the market for healthcare in Nebraska. This complicated task couldn’t be in better hands.
