Obama to Appoint New Fed Vice Chairman

It has been reported that President Obama plans to appoint Janet Yellen, President and CEO of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco, as the new Fed Vice Chairman.

She is considered one of the most 'dovish' members of the central bank's policymakers, meaning she is seen to lean toward policies that will boost growth and promote employment rather than those aimed at keeping inflation at bay.

Yep. You heard it correctly. She is willing to risk further inflation in a vain attempt to promote economic growth with a printing press.

Should NASA Return to the Moon?

As an aerospace engineering student at The University of Texas at Austin, I am particularly affected by this decision. In addition, I have reaped the benefits associated with funding NASA:

I will admit that I once dreamed of working at NASA. Not anymore. In approaching any problem, I often desire to comprehend the underlying principles. This time is no different. One cannot deny that there are benefits to returning to the moon. According to NASA, a few reasons to return to the moon are:

  1. To "[extend] human presence to the moon to enable eventual settlement."
  2. To "[pursue] scientific activities that address fundamental questions about the history of Earth, the solar system and the universe - and about our place in them."

Why is Haiti so poor?

Newsweek posted an interesting interview with Michele Wuker of the World Policy Institute about the reasons for Haiti's crushing poverty. She mentions US military intervention, along with farm subsidies and food aid, as being a big part of the problem. She said of Haiti's devastated agriculture industry:

As for Haitian farmers competing with U.S. imports, it raises the larger question of how the U.S. subsidizes its farm industry and dumps surplus crops in the form of food aid. This practice has done a lot of damage in Haiti and other developing countries. For Haiti to sustain its own people, it needs to rebuild the roads and infrastructure needed to transport crops internally.

Here's an informative video from the Heritage Foundation on farm subsidies.

Public Education

I recently read an opinion column in The Daily Texan concerning healthcare and the public option as well as education. If you would like to read my response, please consider reading the article I linked to first. I have copied and pasted my response below:

---------------------

In “UT and the public option”, Joshua Avelar said he “[finds] it ironic that arguments against government expansion into health care were being made at a public institution by public university students.”

I do not find it ironic that many students who are against government expansion into healthcare came to UT Austin — we are simply seeking an education. Whether or not the institution is public or private is irrelevant.

Gold, Gold, Gold, and more Gold.

Wow. It is simply amazing to see all those gold predictions that we've been listening about by people like Peter Schiff and Jim Rogers come true. It just reaffirms my faith in our cause...

"The Fed reiterated the fact that they'll keep interest rates low to stimulate growth, which will ultimately lead to a weaker dollar and higher inflation," said David Beahm, vice president in economic research at Blanchard & Co. in New Orleans.

Combined with demand from central banks, the continued drop in the U.S. dollar "is a great recipe for gold," he said.

GDP -- Haven't You Heard? The Recession Is Over.

In keeping with tradition, I'll outline what I believe to be the most important statistics in the newest GDP report (percent changes from the previous quarter):

  1. Consumer spending was up sharply by 3.4%. Thank you, cash-for-clunkers.
  2. Cash-for-clunkers amounted for 1.6% of this quarter's GDP growth rate. Thank you, cash-for-clunkers.
  3. Real federal government consumption expenditures and gross investment increased 7.9 percent (National defense +8.4%, Nondefense +6.8%, State and Local -1.1%). Obama is the peace president, right? State and local governments wisely cut back on expenditures while the federal government is full steam ahead with the Fed's printing press. Fortunately, California didn't have explicit access to it in order to purchase its own bonds.

All Roads Lead to Rome

From Bloomberg.com:

The U.S. Commerce Department is setting up an office intended to help entrepreneurs transform ideas into companies.

What a genius idea!! Why didn't we think of this before?!  Of course! The GOVERNMENT should help facilitate the materialization of ideas in the marketplace!

The administration will try to “catalyze breakthrough” technologies so that economic growth won’t be based on speculative bubbles, the White House economic council said in a report the same day.

So you're saying that the parasitic bureaucracy that leeches on productivity while enabling a Ponzi economy will be the indirect arbiter of societal innovation?  Good plan.

The Price of Gold and an International Central Bank

Gold recently touched $1,000 per ounce -- but, what is this price telling us?

Ron Paul has argued that "a soaring gold price is a vote of 'no confidence' in the central bank and the dollar." I wholeheartedly agree; we can refer to historical charts of gold and the dollar index to reaffirm this point.

Introducing LOLA...

LOLA

LOLA, Ladies of Liberty Alliance, is an up and coming women's organization that aims to educate, mobilize, and train libertarian women within the movement.  We are hoping to create an environment for women to learn and gain confidence to fight for what they believe in.

The actual unveiling of the calendar will take place at the Northeast Regional Campaign for Liberty Conference in Valley Forge, PA.

Please support LOLA and their desire to bring more women into the movement!

Obama the Capitalist

Yes, this is real:  It sounds like it came from The Onion, but this article seriously proposes that our president is a capitalist.  Makes you feel all warm inside to know that, doesn't it?
